It’s no secret that Valve has its most lucrative market in CS:GO skins. Not only because of the exorbitant prices that some skins can fetch but also because many players are fond of opening the famous CS:GO cases to try their luck and hope for a big reward.

There was much talk that the launch of a new title by Valve, in this case, Counter-Strike 2, could affect the skin market. However, at the time of the announcement, the developers were clear that skins remain as they are but will have graphics improvements thanks to the Source 2 engine.

As a result, the number of CS:GO cases opened in March increased so much that, according to CSGOCaseTracker, 39.5 million were opened, generating Valve almost $100M in revenue.

Over 39M CS:GO cases were opened in March

As mentioned, according to CSGOCaseTracker, 39.5 million CS:GO cases were opened on the Steam marketplace in March. As a result, it is now more than confirmed that the skins of our beloved Counter-Strike: Global Offensive have never been in obvious danger with the release of Counter-Strike 2 in the summer of 2023.

But, announcing the release of CS2 not only brought many community members back to the game and broke concurrent player records, but the price of some skins, stickers, and cases have increased. As a result, many casual players and collectors have taken advantage to make some profit.

This figure of 39.5 million, reflected by CSGOCaseTracker, represents a 30% increase over February. Moreover, as we observe in the following graph, the purchase of CS:GO cases on the Steam marketplace has grown impressive since March 22.

Now, doing some math and considering that each key for the cases is worth $2.5, Valve would have made approximately $98,750,000; not bad, right?

Steam market growth

Despite the data published by CSGOCaseTracker, we must clarify that the data are not official, but the figures are very close to reality. Now, this is not the only way. For example, Valve earns money through skins, as let’s remember that Valve keeps a percentage of the purchase/sale of each skin on the Steam market.

On the other hand, the increase in the price of skins, in addition to benefiting players, also directly benefits developers because the higher the price, the higher the commissions for Valve.

Finally, this shows us that skins were never in danger with the arrival of CS2 because, as we all know, this is the real golden goose for Valve.

If these figures were so high in only nine days since the announcement of Counter-Strike 2 last March 22, we can’t imagine what the month would be like when the game is officially launched to the community.
