Cheers League of Legends esports fans as some reports are suggesting that Riot Games are planning to include one more esports international event in 2024. This will make it the third LoL international event after the MSI and the League of Legends championship. Here are the complete details regarding this brand-new development.

Riot Games to add one more international event to LoL Esports

According to Christopher ‘MonteCristo’ Mykles, a prominent figure in League of Legends esports. Started out as a caster he is currently into content creation. In a recent episode of the ‘Last Free Nation’ podcast, Myjkes disclosed that all regions are set to adopt the LEC’s three-split system in 2024.

This change is driven by Riot Games’ intention to introduce another international event. MonteCristo had previously hinted at the possibility of the LCS following suit, but this is the first claim that suggests comprehensive format changes across other regions.

In 2023, Riot Games implemented a third split in the LEC, comprising a regular season, group stage, and playoffs. The winners of each split earn automatic qualification for the LEC Season Finals, while the three teams with the highest Championship Points also join them.

League of Legends Esports: A whole-year calendar

The League of Legends esports scene is divided into a year-round structure with three major events: the Spring Split, the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), and the World Championship.

  • Spring Split: The Spring Split is the first split of the year and is typically held from January to April. The top teams from each region compete in a regular season format, with the top teams advancing to the playoffs. The winner of the Spring Split playoffs qualifies for the MSI.
  • Mid-Season Invitational (MSI): The MSI is an international tournament held in the middle of the year. The top teams from each major region, as well as a few teams from minor regions, compete in a single-elimination bracket. The winner of the MSI is considered to be the best team in the world at that time.
  • World Championship: The World Championship is the most prestigious tournament in League of Legends esports. The top teams from each major region compete in a double-elimination bracket. This year WORLDS 2023 will take place in Korea.

Can it accommodate a third international event?

The busier schedule may seem attractive to fans, but it may not be as welcoming for players. With an increased number of matches, players have less time between events to prepare and perform at their peak.

We don’t have specific details about the events, but they will probably happen after the Spring Split. Having these events back-to-back makes the competition tougher and gives top teams more chances to win trophies.

However, the tight schedule can create problems for teams as they try to keep up and perform well. Basically, while fans like more matches, players find it hard to prepare and perform at their best.
