Finally, after a long series of failures, FURIA Esports have allegedly decided to change their roster. The team will bench Andre “drop” Abreu, who joined in August 2021. Since then, FURIA have gone through some epic ups and downs.

Their highest peak was IEM Rio Major 2022, where they finished 3rd-4th. But apart from that great result, they haven’t achieved that much. In 2023, FURIA went from one disaster to another.

The team started with 17th-20th place at IEM Katowice. After that tournament came ESL Pro League S17, where they finished 9th-12th. At IEM Rio, their result was decent: 5th-6th place. But soon after, at BLAST.tv Paris Major, they finished 15th-16th. Two weeks later, they were 9th-12th again, this time at IEM Dallas.

FURIA’s roster change

It is not yet clear who might replace drop. All kinds of rumors circulate and some of them claim that Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo will be the one, even though he announced earlier this year that this season will be his last.

Whoever gets signed will need to be Brazilian. The problem with FURIA is that they’re not a multi-national team. They’ve only had Brazilians on the roster in recent memory and they’ll probably stick to that formula. Otherwise, a lot of people will need to start learning a lot more English and that’s not optimal.

How can FURIA improve

FURIA need to rethink their strategy going forward. In the last six months, a lot of the world’s best teams have figured out how they like to play and now they fully understand what would compromise their tactics.

FURIA still win against top teams from time to time, the way they did against FaZe Clan at IEM Rio 2023. But in most cases, they get crushed. Cloud9, Heroic, Monte, Ninjas in Pyjamas, and many other teams defeated them.

However, it’s worth noting that some of these exceptional competitors did lose a map against the Brazilians. This clearly shows that the potential for becoming a considerably stronger team is there. But something is missing.

To some extent, FURIA seem to be burnt out. When you rarely change your roster, the excitement disappears after a while and everything becomes similar to a routine. The fact that the players clearly see what their ceiling is doesn’t help either. But now that someone new is about to join, FURIA are likely to reset and start climbing again.
