There is no doubt that Worlds 2023 was a terrible tournament for League of Legends in Europe, namely in the LEC. After the last day of the Swiss Stage of the tournament ended, we have that both Fnatic and G2 Esports, the only two LEC teams that remained alive, failed in their last attempt. As a result, we have that, for the first time in the last 9 years, Europe will not have a representative in the playoffs of a Worlds.

The play, or the “epic,” of the European teams at Worlds 2023 fell short, as both Fnatic and G2 Esports lost 1-2 in the final matches of the Swiss Stage. On Fnatic’s side, they failed against Weibo Gaming despite winning the first map. While G2 Esports gave a lot of battle to Bilibili Gaming, they finally conceded on the third map.

This marks a (negative) milestone in Worlds history for European teams, as this is the first time this has happened in the last 9 years.

Fnatic and G2 Esports fail to make it past the Swiss Stage of Worlds 2023

The European teams have no excuse after what happened in this tournament. After failing in the first matches that, in theory, were the “easiest” ones, they fought to the death against the toughest of the LCK and LPL regions, where there was no “weak” team.

Fnatic started their journey in this match by beating Weibo on the first map, showing great play, and keeping their hopes of advancing to the Quarterfinals. However, Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok woke up his team to show all his power and apply an extraordinary reverse sweep.

On the other hand, G2 Esports started their match against Bilibili Gaming, knowing that they were the last hope of the LEC in Worlds 2023. The Samurai were very close to taking the victory because they took a lot of confidence after winning the second map. However, Bilibili displayed their potential to take the victory and eliminate them from the tournament.

Rasmus “Caps” Winther had a great form and kept alive the hopes of G2 Esports to qualify to the Quarterfinals. However, Chen “Bin” Ze-Bin and Bilibili Gaming, in general, annulled him in the third match completely.

Europe is left without a representative in the Quarterfinals of Worlds 2023

As mentioned, the defeats of G2 and Fnatic on the last day of the Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage left Europe without a representative in the tournament. Moreover, this is the first time this has happened in the last 9 years.

And is that a disaster like this of European teams in a Worlds happened in 2014 when Fnatic, Alliance, and SK Gaming failed to advance from the Group Stage. However, since then, Europe has always had at least one participant in the playoffs, including two in the Grand Final.
