FC Coritiba, one of the oldest football clubs in Brazil, has announced its entry into esports, starting with signing a Dota 2 roster. The new team will represent the club in the second division of Dota Pro Circuit South America under the Coritiba E-Sports tag.

The Brazilian club revealed that it has acquired the former Spirits line-up, which have previously competed in Division II of DPC in South America.

Coritiba E-Sports roster

Besides previously playing for the Brazilian team Spirits, three members of the squad also earlier performed as a part of Peruvian org APU King of Kings. The team had a victorious second week in the first division of the region’s DPC, however, their performance worsened until they couldn’t avoid the displacement.

The squad finished at the 7th spot in Dota Pro Circuit 2021/22 tournament table and fell into the second division, followed by the benching of two players.

Here’s the complete Coritiba E-Sports Dota 2 roster:

  • Giovanni “Jupiter” Ramos Pereira
  •  Lucas “hyko” Oliveira Morais
  •  Caio “Nuages” Oliveira
  •  Pedro “mini” Rezende
  •  Jean “Mr.Jeans” Natividad

Entering esports scene as a football club becomes a trend

While the newly established Coritiba E-Sports Dota 2 squad will compete in the DPC’s lower division, the club’s football team participates in Série A, the highest soccer division in Brasil. This means that the new Dota 2 squad is roofed by a popular and established sports organization with over 100 years of tradition.

Coritiba isn’t the first sports club to try its success in esports. One of the greatest examples is the Paris Saint-Germain F.C., which previously signed the Chinese Dota 2 line-up LGD to create the current PSG.LGD roster, among its other active esports divisions, including League of Legends, FIFA Online and Arena of Valor. Another example is the French organization AS Monaco Esports, which previously partnered with Gambit Esports to from the AS Monaco Gambit Dota 2. However, the team was recently released along with Gambit’s main Dota 2 roster.

Without a doubt, there seems to be an emerging trend of joining esports in the football community that is about to catch on and stay as well.

DPC South America 2021/2022 Tour 3: Division II starts on July 6. Coritiba E-Sports will fight against the other seven squads to enter Division I.
