The first day of the group stage of Elite League was rough for a lot of teams, including the ones that won The International twice, OG and Team Spirit. The biggest favorites did well. They won their matches even though the format is best-of-two.

Group A Results

In group A of Elite League, G2.iG played two matches. One against HEROIC, which they won, and one against OG, which they drew. Entity also started well, with a victory against OG. This shouldn’t have happened because Ceb’s roster is very strong while Entity’s is mostly made up of players who never won anything major. But OG still lost.

HEROIC’s day 1 ended with a victory against Team Spirit and a defeat against G2.iG. The victory against Spirit was very beautiful and it showcased HEROIC’s prowess. Both times they picked Keeper of the Light in combination with high-mobility heroes like Primal Beast, Luna, and Pangolier.

Game 1 lasted less than 40 minutes, while game 2 lasted 52. It’s not clear at this point what’s going on inside Team Spirit. They have been playing poorly (for their ambitions, of course) since the start of the year. At BetBoom Dacha Dubai they finished 5th – 6th. At DreamLeague S22 they were 4th. Then they missed the qualification for DreamLeague S23.

At Elite League, Spirit started in stage 2 and their defeat against HEROIC is all we have so far. In the coming days, they’ll either get their act together or be eliminated.

Team Falcons, unsurprisingly, won their first match against PSG Quest. They struggled in game 1, which lasted 48 minutes, despite picking heroes like Sven and Mirana, whose initiation is formidable. In game 2, they were much faster and won in less than 25 minutes with Wraith King and Underlord against a Medusa.

Azure Ray have not yet played their first match but they’re expected to do well. This Chinese team has very strong players. Take fy, for instance, who played in two TI Grand Finals and finished in the top four at two other editions of this tournament. With a player like him directing Azure’s efforts, it’s hard to not expect something good.

Despite the early losses, teams like Spirit and Quest could still recover until the end of the stage. Let’s not forget that the round-robin format guarantees that each team will play seven matches. The battle has only just begun.
