Counter-Strike: Global Offensive seems to be having a renaissance in terms of players worldwide. Since last November, the number of players playing simultaneously has grown exponentially, according to SteamCharts.

And the fact is that last February 26, 2023, CS:GO once again surpassed the record set earlier this year with approximately 20,000 more players playing simultaneously. The most recent peak CS:GO reached was 1,354,248 players two days ago.

A rise in popularity or return of players?

According to SteamCharts, the growth in this statistic is 10.84% over January. And it is worth noting that January broke records concerning players connected and playing simultaneously.

Usually, this kind of peak in terms of players can happen when very important tournaments are being played because players are eager to play after watching the games. In the case of February, we have enjoyed the actions of the IEM Katowice 2023, and right now, the ESL Pro League S17 is being played. In addition to the rest of the tournaments of a lower level, that does not cease worldwide.

Now, we can also note that something similar happened last winter. After some great numbers in January 2022, the stats stayed and decreased throughout the weeks until July, when the number of players rose again.

However, we cannot even compare the figures for January 2022 with January 2023. Last year, the average number of players was 602,376.3; this year, it is 726,150.3; if we count February, we have 801,827.4. Undoubtedly, we have a return of players who had moved away from the game for different reasons because the popularity of CS:GO in the new generations is not so great.

ESL Pro League S17 benefits the most

There is no doubt that these statistics greatly benefit the ESL Pro League S17. As we know, this tournament is underway, and the best players in the world are playing their matches. Some have already written their name in the playoffs, while others are about to start their respective groups.

The community’s interest will undoubtedly translate into viewers in the streams and, consequently, in the game itself. We are sure that after watching their favorite teams, they will want to go and play a few games on FACEIT, ESEA, or another platform.

With this great start, there is no doubt that we can think that it will be a tremendously competitive 2023 season for Valve. After the ESL Pro League S17 is over, the BLAST.tv CS:GO Paris Major will be played in May, with a prize pool of $1.25M. Unlike in previous years, we hope these numbers will continue to increase, and we will once again have a CS:GO at the top of the esports popularity ranking.
