In Dota 2 patch 7.34e, the position 4 heroes play a critical role. They often take care of one of the core heroes and sacrifice themselves for the sake of a successful gank on one of the enemy cores. Understading which roamers are great in the current meta can bring you a lot of MMR.

In this guide, you will discover 10 of the best position 4 heroes in Dota 2 patch 7.34e. One thing to keep in mind is that many of these heroes don’t have good win rates not because they’re not strong, but because the Dota 2 community doesn’t know how to use them effectively.

1. Pudge: 48.5% WR

pudge

Valve

Pudge will always be good in Dota 2, regardless of the meta, simply because every players has at least 100 games with this hero.

The buffs he received in Dota 2 patch 7.33 made him extremely popular, thanks in part to his Meat Hook, which now travels at a speed of 1600 instead of 1450. This allows players to land a hook a lot more frequently than before because the target can’t escape it that easily.

Pudge is satisfying to play. And when you enjoy playing a hero, you tend to play it well. In this particular case, the job you need to perform is quite simple. Locate targets, hook them, and press R. But that’s easier said than done.

When you play Pudge, positioning and timing matter more than anything else. That’s why you need a Blink Dagger. Some players prefer using Rod of Atos to keep the target in place. That can also work, but it’s a different playstyle that you’ll have to master.

Pudge is strong in the current meta because he can find a lot of farm around the map, which in turn allows him to buy a few key items that let him go wild. This hero has a lot of natural HP, so it’s enough to buy just a bit of armor, mobility, and HP regen to be perfectly fine.

Once a hero is hooked, escaping Pudge is incredibly difficult. You can do it if you have high mobility, but not if you’re a mere melee hero with no escape mechanism built into your toolkit. Weaver, Queen of Pain, Slark, and other such heroes don’t mind playing against Pudge. But most do. Even Ember Spirit will struggle if he doesn’t have a Remnant waiting for him.

2. Tiny: 44.4% WR

tiny

Valve

Tiny is the perfect initiator because he can blink in, stun a target, and then throw it back to the rest of his team for a quick kill. His combination of tankiness and initiation skills makes him really fun to play.

Dota 2 patch 7.34e favors heroes that can do a lot with very little. In Tiny’s case, a pair of boots and a Blink Dagger will be sufficient to get the job done. If you also have a Shadow Blade, that’s just an additional initiation tool.

People used to play Tiny mid, but then they realized that he doesn’t provide much apart from a clean way to initiate. So they started playing him in the position 4 role. Using him as position 5 is not a good idea because he’s weak in the laning phase and needs a Blink Dagger to be effective.

Tiny’s natural resistance to slow and other debuffs makes him the perfect frontliner. He’s not a proper tank though, because he doesn’t have enough skills that go in that direction. He’s built as a potential right-clicker, but he needs a lot of attack speed to be able to be effective as a purely offensive unit.

3. Techies: 47% WR

techies

Valve

Techies has the ability to easily farm jungle stacks, which is the reason why some people love this hero. If you farm enough stacks using your Blast Off and Proximity Mines, you can buy yourself a few key items that allow you to hunt enemy heroes around the map.

The sheer damage of Techies’ abilities gives the hero the option to become an authentic assassin. In team fights, when there’s a lot of chaos and players can’t pay attention to everything, Techies thrives because he only needs to use his abilities once to wreak havoc.

A mere Blast Off will often have the impact of a Zeus ultimate, in addition to stunning targets for 1.4s. A Reactive Tazer will disarm enemies in a 400 radius area. And Proximity Mines, with their massive damage, will quickly kill support heroes and severely damage cores.

These days, Techies is no longer played like five years ago. Back then, it was all about creating a minefield. Now it’s more about farming your core items and then participating in fights the same way other heroes do.

Some of the best Techies items are Ethereal Blade, Force Staff, Arcane Boots, Aether Lens, and Octarine Core.

4. Snapfire: 44% WR

snapfire

Valve

Snapfire can deal a lot of damage. But to succeed, you need teammates that can either stun the enemy or, even better, drastically slow his movement speed. Snapifire loves heroes like Mars, Faceless Void, Phantom Assassin, Venomancer, and others, who can provide abilities that synergize well with her ultimate.

When you play Snapfire in the position 4 role, the objective is to farm a few core items and then play around your initiator. Always have your ultimate ready and don’t use it until the opportunity to use it effectively arises. You can also do it without any setup, but you’ll have to be really smart with your aim. Otherwise, enemy heroes will easily dodge your globs.

Using this ability from short range is a bad idea because it’s hard to control. The ideal range is somewhere between 750 and 1250.

If the game goes on for long enough, Snapfire becomes a high-damage core that can quickly destroy enemy heroes with Scatterblast and Lil’ Shredder. Just buy a Dadelaus and the impact you’ll have on the game will increase substantially.

In most cases, you’ll be expected to contribute with damage from afar, using your ultimate. But you can become more active if you want.

Firesnap Cookie can be used to set up amazing initiations that result in long-duration stuns (2.2s) and easy kills. The same ability can save you or an ally.

5. Clockwerk: 47.5% WR

rattletrap

Valve

Clockwerk is an excellent pick for situations in which you need a form of long-range initiation against a target that cannot easily blink away after it’s been trapped. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a core hero. Even a support hero, if he’s important enough for the enemy team in the fights, will be sufficient.

Clockwerk’s ultimate ability, Hookshot, has a cooldown of just 60 – 30s. This means that it can be used to create frequent ganks. When you play this hero, your goal is to constantly scout the map with Rocket Flare, figure out where the enemy heroes are, and then disrupt their farming patterns.

If your plan is to play a passive game, don’t pick this hero because he’s not very good defensively. He farms slowly, he provides very little in terms of defensive capabilities, and his mechanism is to Hookshot people. He’s like Pudge, but in reverse. And the speed of his Hookshot is so high that it’s almost impossible to escape it.

One of the things that you need to be careful about is out-of-team-range initiations. If you hit a target that’s three screens away, your team may not be able to join you or you might die before they arrive. When you gank isolated targets, being a bit too far ahead isn’t that big of a problem. But in team fights, you don’t want to initiate alone into an entire enemy lineup.

6. Rubick: 44.1% WR

rubick

Valve

Rubick is the perfect hero to pick when the enemy team has powerful abilities that can be stolen or should be deterred. You never want to be in a position where a team has a hero like Enigma and they feel entirely comfortable about using a Black Hole against you at any given time.

If you have a Silencer on your team, they will need to think twice before initiating. If you have a Rubick, that makes the situation even more difficult, because you could potentially steal this powerful ultimate and turn the fight around.

The great thing about Rubick is that his ultimate has a 20 / 12 / 4s cooldown. So if you get to level 18, you could potentially steal and use several powerful spells in a single fight. Instead of having one hero, you’ll be the equivalent of two or three.

Other abilities that make Rubick a feared hero are Arcane Supremacy (+26% spell amplification and +240 cast range), Fade Bolt (35% damage reduction for 10s, and 325 damage), and Telekinesis, which keeps a target disabled for more than 3 seconds.

When you buy the right items, Rubick is a very powerful hero. Blink Dagger and Aether Lens should be a the top of your list. Aghanim’s Scepter, Arcane Boots, Glimmer Cape, Ghost Scepter, Force Staff, and Phylactery are other excellent choices. Of course, Octarine Core, if you can afford it, is absolutely amazing for this hero because it greatly lowers the cooldown of his spells.

For the purpose of farming and winning team fights, you should always start with maximizing your Fade Bolt before your other two basic abilities, and take the level 10 talent that further reduces a target’s damage output when using Fade Bolt.

7. Keeper of the Light: 45.2% WR

keeper of the light

Valve

KotL is one of the heroes that can win a game almost on his own despite not playing the role of a core. His toolkit is very impressive and mixes well with that of many other heroes.

Only 2% of matches feature KotL these days, but that’s because players have forgotten what the Dota 2 Gandalf can do.

Illuminate deals 290 max damage at level 2, and 500 max damage at level 4. Because of this, KotL is one of the strongest laners in the game. He’s also one of the best split-pushers.

Another reason why KotL excels in the laning phase has to do with his Chakra Magic, which restores 75 – 300 mana at no cost and reduces cooldown by 3 – 6s for all abilities that are currently on cooldown.

In team fights, KotL can blind enemies for 4s, causing them to miss 40% of their attacks. He can also knock them back with the same ability.

When he’s in Spirit Form, KotL gains amazing buffs and abilities that greatly improve his ability to fight and move around the map.

Playing KotL is a lot more fun if you have heroes on your team that can benefit from the constant mana regen. Examples include Bristleback and Storm Spirit. For offensive purposes, KotL should be picked when you have heroes that can reliably stun or slow for 2-5s. That way, your Q will almost never miss.

The only disadvantage when playing KotL is that you’ll end up stealing a lot of farm from your cores. After level 7, this hero can farm very quickly at almost no cost at all, and move around the map at great speed.

8. Earth Spirit: 46% WR

earth spirit

Valve

Earth Spirit is a hero that can roam and gank with ease thanks to his Rolling Boulder. Thanks to its low cooldown, this ability functions like a Force Staff or a Blink Dagger, even though the distance covered (750) is smaller without a remnant.

When a remnant is used, the maximum distance is 1500. Combine that with the fact that the cooldown of this ability is 4s at level 4 and you quickly realize that Earth Spirit has the equivalent of around five Blink Daggers, which is extraordinary.

When put to good use, Earth Spirit’s mobility will lead to a high success rate. The Dota 2 community at large isn’t very successful with this hero, but that’s because he’s almost as challenging to play well as an Invoker.

Some players, such as JerAx and Cr1t-, are experts when it comes to using ES effectively because they played hundreds of games with him. To reach their level, you will need to practice diligently.

Apart from damaging his opponents with his abilities, Earth Spirit can slow their movement speed by 50% for 4s, silence them for 3.5s, and stun them for close to 2s. This versatile arsenal, combined with his mobility, makes him one of the best position 4 heroes in the game. Few other heroes will reward you as much as ES does for reaching a high level of mastery.

After level 6, Earth Spirit can deal 40 / 80 / 120 damage per second using his ultimate. The duration is refreshed each time a new remnant is placed down in the vicinity of the target. This means that you could potentially maintain the effect for as long as you have remnants available.

9. Earthshaker: 49.5% WR

earthshaker

Valve

Earthshaker is another position 4 hero that’s really fun to play. Thanks to his Enchant Totem, which costs just 45 – 60 mana, you can easily get last hits during the laning phase. The cooldown of this ability is 5s, so you can use it multiple times per creep wave if you want. The only problem is that you’ll run out of mana if you start doing that early.

Later in the game, Enchant Totem will start doing a lot of damage, especially if you buy a few good items. Its 400% bonus damage means that you could potentially initiate on a target, hit it with this ability, use Enchant Totem again, hit it again, and utilize the remaining abilities that you have to stun and damage the target.

If the fight goes on for just a few more seconds, you can Enchant Totem again and hit the target for the 3rd time with +400% bonus damage. This means that in total, you will have hit the target for the equivalent of 15 attacks plus your abilities. Against most heroes, that’s more than enough to get a kill.

Earthshaker is the perfect counter to illusion-based heroes thanks to his ultimate, which deals a lot of damage when numerous enemies are hit by it. One Echo Slam followed by two Enchant Totem hits and a hero like Terrorblade or Phantom Lancer melts away.

Players who enjoy spamming these heroes always ban ES because they understand how big of a threat he is. He can simply wait for you in the trees while you’re trying to clear a lane and you’re dead before you can react to him. Even with a Black King Bar, there won’t be enough time to press the button because you will be permastunned.

10. Chen: 51% WR

chen

Valve

Chen is the hero who brings an entire zoo with him wherever he goes. Because of that, almost nobody likes to play him. But he is actually very strong, especially in the early game.

Chen can quickly buy himself a pair of boots and a Mekansm, and then proceed to take down one enemy tower after another. If his team is competent, everyone will understand that the objective is to quickly take away map control from the enemy and create a decisive networth advantage.

Even a 4000 gold lead allows you to take Roshan almost for free. After that, you can take down all tier 2 towers, and by the 20-minute mark, the enemy team either has to stay in base or risk getting killed over and over.

Most players in the lower MMR brackets don’t have the discipline to wait for the right moment or the skill to perform successful smoke ganks, so the game will be over very quickly simply because of the strength difference that exists between the two teams.

Chen’s Penitence works well in combination with heroes that love to attack using right-clicks. That’s because he slows enemies by 36% and causes all allies to have +80 attack speed against them for 8s! What’s even more amazing is that Chen gives himself +350 attack speed for that duration.

This means that a Chen equipped with a Maelstrom is actually quite dangerous. Nobody builds that item, but it could work.

Chen’s ultimate provides a 200 / 300 / 400 instant global heal, plus an additional 160 / 240 / 320 heal over the next 8 seconds. Combined with a Mekansm, that ability alone can win you battles.
