Early last week, some changes came to League of Legends’ ARAM game mode, with the mode’s long-running map, the Howling Abyss, receiving its first significant updates since it launched in 2013.

Update Notes

Like the back of our hands, the map we all knew has received several updates, such as the growth of an additional tree throughout the center of the map and the addition of hexagonal gates, which were introduced in Summoner’s Rift last preseason.

In addition, the outer turrets of the Howling Abyss will now fall when defeated, leaving half a lane of debris on the ground in their wake. This makes the Howling Abyss a very different battlefield from what we were used to.

Now, as is to be expected with every update Riot Games introduces to each of its titles, these changes indirectly altered dozens of champions in the League of Legends roster.

That is why, if you have already identified these changes and are looking for a new secret weapon to achieve victories, we will show you the five champions that benefited the most in this game mode after the update.

Ivern

Ivern’s Brushmaker (W) has always been among the strongest champions in the Howling Abyss despite very few places to hide.

Adding the tree mentioned above in the center of the map has allowed Ivern to create even thicker hiding places. In contrast, Brushmaker’s combination with the fallen towers can make a virtually unbreakable line of defense for retreating teams.

Maokai

Maokai has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of this update as he has received an upgrade to two of his most potent abilities, Sapling Toss (E) and Nature’s Grasp (R).

The other tree gives Maokai much more space to deploy his army of small trees, while the fallen towers will leave little room for his opponents to dodge the roots of his ultimate.

Anivia

Anivia is reborn as one of the most dangerous threats in ARAM mode. Her Ice Wall (W) can keep enemies locked to one side of the map when placed next to one of the fallen towers.

On the other hand, his Glacial Storm (R) will trap and slow down anyone who tries to sneak through the small lane space left behind a downed tower.

In addition, with the return of Anivia’s main item, Rod of Ages, after three years, this champion is back as if she never left.

Qiyana

What the fallen towers generate in this new update fell like a godsend for champions like Qiyana, in addition to the additional brush. This brush gives Qiyana another target to use her green Terrashape (W), while the fallen towers help this champion to claim an orange one.

Players using Qiyana will significantly feel the effect of the fallen towers when using the Supreme Display of Talent (R), as they will produce a wider stun radius on the map.

Zeri

While it makes some of them more powerful, others, like Zeri, help them to make better use of all their abilities.

Zeri has always had very tricky gameplay in the Howling Abyss, as both the Ultrashock Laser (W) and Spark Surge (E) interact with walls.

The addition of the fallen towers gives Zeri more angles to extend his Ultrashock Laser while also giving him more walls to slide down during a team fight.
