A considerable leak hits Valve

Valve has recently possibly suffered the most significant content leak in its entire history. The company has been robbed of many items from an asset repository dating back to 2016. Primarily, the affected games are Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, Portal, and Counter-Strike: Source.

Data breach

Due to the data leak, items that no longer exist or were never released have been revealed, so the community has taken the opportunity to experiment with them.

The leaks seem to originate from an account that calls itself WandererLeaker and has spread all this information through Discord.

The person leaking the information in the Discord chat wrote:

“I don’t care anymore, I also did my toying around with it for a few years, but did not upload because I was threatened every time […] A real shame.

I have no legal binding to these files. Not anymore”

He then adds:

“I have held onto these files since 2016.”

The information they have leaked is in the form of asset repositories. This is a way in which a game’s files are typically bundled together to be shared with an external partner.

The most affected title

Although several titles have been affected, the most significant leak in terms of scale is for Team Fortress 2. We are talking about 61 GB of leaked content, almost all the assets that the game had, for example, maps, skins, and accessories.

All assets are dated 2016; the files include reminder content and content that is no longer available or abandoned and did not make it to release.

In addition, the basics of a discussed Raid mode are redesigned as elements of Mann vs. Machine mode and some entirely new map variants. Unfortunately, there are so many prototype maps that not all of them have been unearthed yet.

Other assets include a 3D model of Saxton Hale, weapon variants, and a spellbook witch based on an earlier version of Miss Pauling.

The community loves it

All this content is something that a large part of the community loves, especially those who love mods. So many of them are taking advantage of all the ideas to create content. Reddit users post many items, making it very difficult to differentiate between the real thing and the witty memes.

It is important to note that much of this content is unusable due to age or what were just a few small ideas. But the leak is considered to be of great importance due to the size of the data that has been leaked.

All the titles mentioned are incredible treasures of Valve, which means a tough blow for the company in terms of privacy.
