Still Moving Under Gunfire (Team SMG) shocked the VALORANT community Sunday afternoon by announcing the release of its all-female pro roster.
No explanation was given about the sudden release, but in a statement posted on Team SMG’s social media accounts, the team thanked their entire roster for their historic contributions.
“They have consistently impressed us with their talent, dedication, and teamwork. They are true champions, and we are incredibly proud of everything they have accomplished,” said Team SMG in their posts.
The her-story making roster, composed of, Kelly “shirazi” Jaudian, Alexandria “Alexy” Francisco, Camille “Kamiyu” Enriquez, Odella “enerii” Abraham, and Ryona Shannen “Tarathiel” Tan, had a phenomenal 34-game undefeated streak heading towards the VALORANT Game Changers Championship in Sao Paulo, Brazil. They went on to compete against the likes of G2 Gozen and Team Liquid Brazil before losing to the latter in the lower bracket semifinals, placing 4th overall in the worldwide tournament.
A few days earlier, Abigail “Kohaibi” Kong, who was also part of GC roster, left Team SMG after deciding not to renew her contract.
SHIRAZI: ROSTER MOVEMENTS A “NEW DIRECTION” FOR WOMEN IN ESPORTS
For Shirazi, she sees the news as “new direction” for women in competitive esports.
When asked about the latest roster move, she told Fragster.com via Twitter direct message that this opens up more new opportunities for athletes in the competitive gaming scene, like her.
“If we keep working hard and make sure everyone’s treated fairly without any unfair judgment based on gender, we’re going to be on the same level as the guys soon. That’s a really good step forward for all of us and we’re heading in a nice direction with more growth and inclusivity,” Shirazi said in a text message.
Prior to her Team SMG stint, Shirazi played for local orgs in the Philippines such as Bren Esports Victress and TC Arise.
She also revealed that their free agency was announced to her and the team in advance.
“When we got the news about being let go from the organization, I wasn’t exactly surprised. Instead of feeling bad, I’m kinda glad because it means we can now explore other opportunities with different organizations. I’m not feeling let down or sad; it’s more like seeing this as a chance to grow and try out new things,” the veteran controller said.
Shirazi also says, she, Alexy, Kamiyu, enerii, and Tarathiel plan to remain together as a team, and would like to stick together should other organizations make an offer for their roster.
“We are still planning to stick together after the news!” Shirazi said. “There’s no offer yet since the statement was just released that we’re free agents now. We hope to get an offer in time for APAC Game Changers,” she said, translated from Filipino.
“Hey everyone in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific VAL community, I want to say thanks a lot for always having our back. Your constant support means a ton to us. About the recent news, just keep an eye on our social media pages only on Instagram and Twitter for all the updates!” Shirazi said in her message to fans.
