Group A of DreamLeague S20’s stage 1 was an absolute nightmare for everyone. Between the 1st place and the 8th place was a difference of just three points. Six of the eight teams finished with eight or seven points.

Winning just one more game out of 14 would have allowed Tundra Esports and Team Secret to advance to stage 2. But unfortunately for them, they finished with a 50% win rate and then lost against Evil Geniuses in the tiebreaker for 4th place.

For Team Secret, this failure was not a big surprise. After all, they finished WEU Division I in 8th place in Tour 3 of Dota Pro Circuit 2023 and got relegated to Division II. So it’s not like they entered the tournament expecting to finish in the top four in their group.

Tundra had a different problem. They had to compete with a stand-in, which is often a bad idea. This severely downgraded their playstyle and resulted in them being weak enough for other teams to profit. Their record was 7 W – 7 L and in the tiebreaker, they lost against Evil Geniuses.

EG vs. Tundra

The match lasted 35 minutes and Tundra used a very unusual draft. They picked Huskar and Terrorblade, along with Silencer, Skywrath Mage, and Dark Seer. This combination offered them very little crowd control and EG’s Morphling, combined with their Bounty Hunter, simply destroyed them.

At the 12-minute mark, EG’s gold advantage was already 9000. The game was practically over at that point.

EG vs. Secret

EG’s game against Secret was tougher than we expected. Secret fought hard and managed to keep things even for the first 25 minutes. The winner was decided in the epic clashes that started after the 30-minute mark. And the biggest clash of all was the one from the 35-minute mark. Thanks to that victory, EG went on to win the game.

The heroes that were picked by the two sides were very standard and in line with the meta. Secret took Magnus, Snapfire, Void Spirit, Winter Wyvern, and Monkey King. EG picked Timbersaw, Venomancer, Windranger, Silencer, and Faceless Void.

The heroes that had the biggest impact were Timbersaw and Faceless Void. Both of them finished the match with very high gpms (30K+) and exceptional K-D records: 21-4 for Timbersaw and 10-2 for Faceless Void.
