Richard Lewis is one of the best-known journalists in esports and his work over the years has been quite impactful.

Despite being thoroughly disappointed with the industry’s practices and determined to leave it sooner rather than later, he continues to break important stories that both inform and entertain us all. Well, maybe not all. But some of us at least.

Most of Richard’s current work can be found on Substack and YouTube. He also streams on Twitch when he has the time to do it. In previous years, he used to co-host the By The Numbers podcast, later renamed to Return of By The Numbers, with Duncan “Thorin” Shields. Now he’s doing his own thing, and he’s quite successful at it.

At the moment, he has more than 7000 subscribers on Substack and almost 120.000 subscribers on YouTube. On Twitch, he’s followed by around 100.000 people and he talks about everything from esports to politics. He enjoys doing football analyses from time to time, but his main thing is esports journalism, which he loves to hate.

The award

Last time Richard won the Esports Journalist of the Year award, he had one of the most epic speeches in the history of the awards. In fact, it probably was the most memorable speech ever given there.

For various reasons, he decided to use the opportunity to attack a lot of people and companies who were going not just after him but after a lot of other famous esports personalities at the time. Some, including Dr DisRespect, applauded him for his bravery. Others thought it was a really bad move.

What’s certain is that the organizers of the Esports Awards, along with the voters, decided to hand him his 3rd distinction, which pretty much demonstrates that some people appreciate Richard’s work.

But now what? After three awards, will he go for the 4th, as Faker did in League of Legends? Or will he call it quits and focus on other things? It’s likely that he’ll continue his esports activity for the foreseeable future, but he certainly wants to do other things as well, as he repeatedly stated on his YouTube channel.

Truth be told, no matter how much certain people and companies may want him out, esports needs people like him to keep an eye on what’s going on behind the scenes. This industry is far from being mature and devoid of major issues.
