Things are moving fast for Old G. Several days ago, they were just a casual team built by friends for friends with no real intention of competing for real. Now they are the winners of the first open qualifier for the upcoming Dota Pro Circuit.

In total, there will be eight teams in Division II of Western Europe’s league and two of them still need to be determined via a closed qualifier. This qualification tournament is preceded by open qualifiers to determine the eight teams that will play in it.

The rules are simple. Four open qualifiers are played and the best two teams of every one of those tournaments advance to the closed qualifier, which is scheduled to take place between December 19-22. Only the top two teams receive the right to compete in WEU Division II.

Old G’s triumph

Old G had to compete with 29 other teams to be invited to the closed qualifier. The process was brutal and far from easy. The hardest match for Old G took place in the quarterfinals. Unity Esports actually managed to win game 2 against them. This must have worried Sebastien “Ceb” Debs a bit, but he is known to have a strong mind.

Ceb has years and years of experience and has developed the ability to persevere regardless of how bad the situation may look. And because of that, he managed to come back stronger in game 3 and win. His team needed 42 minutes to secure the win but in the end, Old G were victorious.

What’s interesting is how they drafted throughout the match. They started with a lot of OP heroes of Dota 2 patch 7.32d, including Clinkz and Dragon Knight. And in the third game, they simply stole their opponents’ carry.

In game 2, Unity Esports had defeated them with Sniper. Now they took the hero themselves and paired him with a Troll Warlord and a Magnus, just to make sure that the draft has the potential to dominate the mid and late portions of the game.

In the semifinals, Old G’s opponent was much easier to defeat but the games still needed 33 and 40 minutes to complete. Ceb decided to go for a very unusual combination of heroes. In game 1 he picked Spirit Breaker, Zeus, and Razor.

In game 2 he took Sniper and a lot of squishy heroes that looked really weak on paper. But when the action started, it was obvious that Old G knew what they were doing.
