Riot Games’ animated series Arcane is extremely popular, and not just among League of Legends fans, topping the Netflix charts in 52 countries shortly after the release of Act 2. Arcane’s impressive numbers follow a meteoric debut that saw the series dominate the Netflix charts in 38 countries. League of Legends enthusiasts and newcomers alike are enjoying the series worldwide.

The good thing about the series is that you don’t have to know League of Legends to understand it, because it starts from the very beginning, so to speak, with the backstory explanations and character development. As a dedicated LoL-player it’s obviously nice to see a familiar face appear in the series or recognize a character you’ve met in game before, it’s not important to understand the storyline.

Extremely positive feedback

The animations are designed with great detail, and the storylines and plot are designed to be compelling enough that you just have to keep on watching. The style of the series is also quite unique because it stands out from other anime or cartoon series, and the animations run very smoothly. Many scenes are staged in a very cinematic way and you can see how much effort Riot put into the series. On IMDB, the series has received 9.4 stars from 19,000 people, and it has also been praised by viewers on RottenTomatoes.

Another plus point of Arcane is that the characters are all slowly developed and have a believable and complex backstory. It also stays interesting because Arcane doesn’t just rattle off clichés, but delves deeper into the characters. The characters are not only good and evil, but also full of shades of gray, which makes the whole story so realistic.

Exciting sotry

Arcane puts out three episodes a week, which is a relatively large amount. This allows viewers to familiarize themselves with the series and come up with and discuss theories with other fans (you can find lots of discussions on reddit). The format has certainly helped the series become so popular so quickly, as each act and cliffhanger creates even more excitement.

The third and final act of Arcane promises to be the climax of the story and therefore it is relatively likely that it will get even more attention. The third act of Arcane will be released on Netflix on November 20.

What’s next for Arcane after that, and whether there might be a sequel, is not yet clear. But this was likely just the beginning of Riot’s adventure into the world of TV and series. After being critically acclaimed, we can be sure that Riot will soon serve us something even more powerful. Surely the success of Arcane will be the impetus for other game developers to adapt a game into a movie and see how their game does as a movie or series.
