The “winter of esports” has arrived on the European continent as an avalanche or hurricane, as it takes down one of the region’s most important Tier 2 esports organizations, LDLC OL.

This move marks the end of an organization that was in esports for more than 11 years. Furthermore, LDLC OL was undoubtedly one of the longest-running teams in the League of Legends competitive scene in the EMEA region.

There is no doubt that this is really sad news for the LoL competitive scene in EMEA, especially in the LFL, where the team made life in its last years. However, this is just another demonstration that the winter of esports is coming with everything.

LDLC OL announce its dissolution

Through an official statement on its Twitter account, the French organization LDLC OL announced its dissolution after being eliminated in the LFL Summer Split 2023. As a result, the team disappears and leaves through the back door since, after having a long history in the EMEA region, they now decide to leave esports after falling in the Summer Split. Moreover, it is worth noting that this decision comes after their partnership with the French football club Olympique Lyon ends.

As we mentioned, LDLC OL was one of Europe’s longest-running teams in the League of Legends competitive scene. However, in recent seasons the team has had many ups and downs that undoubtedly affected the organization’s continuity.

In 2019, LDLC OL left the EMEA League to join exclusively the LFL, the local French League of Legends league. Since then, the team managed to lift the champions trophy seven times and consequently represented France in different editions of the European Masters.

However, the team only won the EMEA Masters once, in the 2020 season, where they had LEC stars in their lineup, such as Bora “YellOwStaR” Kim and Vincent “Vetheo” Berrié.

LDLC OL helped in the formation of superstars

In addition to being a competitive team, LDLC OL also helped in a big way in the formation of some superstars who shine in the LEC today. We are talking specifically about the likes of Juš “Crownie” Marušič, Markos “Comp” Stamkopoulos, and Martin “Yike” Sundelin. As we know, Crownie is currently part of Team BDS, Comp of KOI, and Yike of G2 Esports.

Lapidary 2023 season for LDLC OL

Similarly, it is worth noting that LDLC OL had a disappointing 2023, as they failed to advance to the playoffs after finishing the regular season with a terrible 6-12 record in the penultimate place of the table. Also, it is fair to mention that LDLC OL are the reigning LFL champions, so this is a disappointing result.

With this elimination in the regular season, the organization decides to close its doors and withdraw from the competitive esports scene, so there is no doubt that it is a sad goodbye.

However, this disappointing end cannot and will not be able to hide all that LDLC OL gave to the EMEA region and all its players.
