The group stage of ESL One Birmingham is over and despite the terrible start for some of the favorites, the number of upsets ended up being small. Of the highly skilled teams, only Gaimin Gladiators failed to advance to the playoffs.

Their run was marked by two defeats, two draws, and one victory. Overall, they didnțt perform that poorly. But because the differences were small, OG won the group with six points while they were eliminated with four. Everyone else in group B had five points, and Spirit ended up being eliminated after the tiebreaker.

In the other group, Talon Esports and Shopify Rebellion left the competition, as was predicted. Despite starting the tournament with two draws, both of them struggled in the next two days and had just four and three points respectively at the end of the stage.

Talon finished with the same record as Gladiators: one win, two draws, and two defeats. Shopify had three draws and two defeats.

Group A Winners

In group A of ESL One Birmingham, Team Falcons and BetBoom Team won the two upper bracket spots and will have two lives in the playoffs. Falcons started the competition with four consecutive wins and could have been eliminated. But in their last match against Talon, they won and avoided an unpleasant scenario.

However, they couldn’t avoid the tiebreaker for 1st – 3rd place. Luckily for them, Liquid lost not just against them but also against BetBoom.

The last qualification spot was claimed by G2.iG, who finished the race with five points out of ten. They drew three times, won once, and lost once. The defeat, strangely enough, came against Talon, while the victory came against BetBoom. This may be of use to them in the playoffs.

Group B Winners

In group B, OG were the winners with six points, followed by Tundra Esports with five. This group featured a four-team tiebreaker in which Tundra won, Xtreme Gaming and HEROIC qualified for the playoffs, and Spirit were eliminated.

This was the second poor result by Spirit at a big Dota 2 event. However, the difference between them and the other competitors was so small that I don’t think it matters. We could easily see Spirit getting a top-six result at Riyadh Masters or The International 2024. All they need to do is patch a few holes in their strategy and develop more cohesion.
