Diablo 4 has been making steady progress since its Season of the Malignant, which was received with criticism.

The current Season of Blood has been a big shift in content and player perception, thanks to newly added features like targeted farming of endgame bosses and the Blood Harvest seasonal events that have addressed major issues that saw Diablo 4 hemorrhage players and Twitch viewers.

Revision of the loot system in Diablo 4

However, the Diablo 4 development team is not resting on their laurels and is working on more changes that they believe will improve the game. In a recent Campfire Chat, Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora acknowledged some existing issues with the current itemization and loot in Diablo 4 and teased some exciting changes to the game’s loot systems. Players will have to wait until next year to see them, though.

Piepiora explained that the team wants items to be the start of a journey for players. When an item drops for a player, they want to be able to say, “This is awesome, I can’t wait to do X, Y, and Z to this and make it really, really great.” Currently, customization of loot in Diablo 4 is limited, as players can only reroll a single stat on any one item. The team is focusing on ways to expand this and reduce the amount of time players spend finding viable gear.

What will change to the loot system in Diablo 4?

Game Director Joe Shely revealed that some underlying changes to the game to facilitate this new overhaul for Diablo 4’s loot would arrive in January’s Season 3. It appears that the major changes will be saved for a later Season.

The slower rollout of these features is not a stall tactic, and the team has already been workshopping them with Diablo 4’s sponsored content creators. Shely explained that it’s more about getting it right than keeping it a secret and told players to look out for more elaborate details on these new systems in the new year. The team is dedicating time to these changes, and player feedback will likely play a role in their implementation.

In summary, Diablo 4 is undergoing a significant overhaul of its loot systems, with major changes set to arrive in a later Season. The development team is focusing on expanding customization of loot and reducing the amount of time players spend finding viable gear. The changes are not a stall tactic, and the team is dedicated to getting it right and incorporating player feedback.
