Dallas Fuel won the Overwatch Championship 4-3 after trading blows with San Francisco Shock all night long in one of the closest matches of the event.

In one of the most exciting championship games ever, the Dallas team defeated the Shock 4-3, putting an end to their chances of winning their third title. After extending the series to the absolute maximum number of maps permitted, Dallas astounded the seasoned squad of Shock by clinching a stunning victory in the final moments of the last map.

Following their victory in the Summer Showdown and subsequent dominance over the West Region for the remainder of the season, the Fuel entered the event with a lot of momentum. The team met far less resistance on their upper-bracket playoff run, dropping just two maps while reeling off victories against Hangzhou Spark, Seoul Dynasty, and Houston Outlaw. The Shock, on the other hand, won five matches over the course of four days to get to the championship match after the Houston Outlaws knocked them into the lower bracket early in the playoffs. With this second-place finish, Shock have now lost three Grand Finals matches this year, having previously lost to the Los Angeles Gladiators and Fuel in the Midseason Madness and Summer Showdown Finals, respectively.

Dallas Fuel vs San Francisco Shock

Dallas got off to a hot start, securing an early lead by dominating the opening map, Oasis. Dallas, however, lost the lead despite having the advantage when Nam-Ju “Striker” Gwon and Kim ‘Proper’ Dong-hyun pulled off spectacular offensive and defensive miracles on King’s Row and Dorado. The Fuel regained their momentum and tied things up again on the newest push map, Esperança, clinging onto a 12m advantage to escape match point. San Francisco retaliated on the subsequent map as Proper put on a brilliant showing for the squad, taking Oasis handily to take a 3-2 lead.

One map away from lifting the Championship trophy, Shock were halted once again by Dallas, who tied the score 3-3 after taking Route 66. While the MVP of the league, Proper, and his team appeared to be in top playoff shape, the Dallas Fuel stood strong with their teamwork and confidence. With Lee “Fearless” Eui-seok and Kwon “Fielder” Joon stepping up exactly when the team needed them, Dallas trounced Shock at Colosso to win its first Overwatch Championship title. In addition to the coveted trophy and rights to brag, at least until the next OWL Championship, the Dallas Fuel also receive $1 million for their victory. The Shock, on the other hand, have to be satisfied with their second-place finish and $500,000 in prize money.
