Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera will be discontinued on September 21, 2023.

Activision recently announced that the servers for the free-to-play Battle Royale game, Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera, will be shutting down. Before Al Mazrah took the lead in the battle royale sequel, Caldera was the final full-size Warzone map and had amassed over 100 million downloads within a year of its release in 2020. Activision kept the servers live for the original Call of Duty: Warzone even after the launch of Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0.

However, since Warzone 2.0 has been renamed to just Warzone, the original Call of Duty: Warzone will be shut down on September 21. According to the official blog post, the decision is being undertaken to allow the development team more time to work on new projects like Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, which is expected to launch this year.

Caldera’s cosmetic and progression

Activision also provided information regarding the progression and cosmetics that players owned. Sadly, once the shutdown is in place, gamers won’t have access to the skins and weapons they paid for or earned on Warzone Caldera. However, all of the Call of Duty: Warzone skins and other cosmetics are still usable in the games that made up the mainline Call of Duty franchise including Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, and Vanguard.

Player progression will also expire, although if players own Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, and Vanguard, their rankings, and levels will be preserved in those games. It’s safe to assume some fans won’t be pleased with this, though, given that many players have been exclusively engaged in Warzone’s battle royale experience. As for multiplayer modes in games like Modern Warfare 2019, Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, and Warzone, they are not affected by the shutdown.

The initial reactions to the announcement are all but positive, with some fans claiming that Activision should offer them a refund for any Warzone Caldera cosmetic they have already paid. However, the majority of fans, those who have already switched to the sequel, will probably not give the termination of the original Call of Duty: Warzone much thought.

What’s next for Activision?

According to reports, the upcoming Call of Duty game will be Modern Warfare 3, which would carry on Task Force 141’s narrative with Makarov serving as its primary enemy. Moreover, there are reports that an additional new Call of Duty battle royale map is on the way, but as of this writing, no official information has been released to support such claims.
