Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta, will host this year’s edition of the World Cyber Games Festival, organizers Big Picture Interactive announced March 13th.

“Jakarta, known for its vibrant energy driven by the younger generation, is teaming up with the global gaming showcase, WCG, to bring you a spectacular festival,” said Big Picture Interactive in the WCG 2024 Festival Facebook page. They add, “we’re gearing up to offer a diverse range of content that will cater to everyone, from influencers to gamers.”

The WCG is one of the oldest esports and gaming events in the world, with its first edition being held 24 years ago, in the year 2000.

This is also the first WCG which focuses on the event being a “festival” rather than a competition, with diverse ranges of content expected to cater to different groups of people, such as influencers and gamers.

In January, the WCG roadmap was revealed to have signalled the shift to a more mixed setup to cater to influencers, slightly away from it being a traditionally esports competition-oriented format.

An influencer-focused tournament, dubbed as the WCG Challenge, will be happening from March to June. WCG Challenge will see influencers representing their respective countries whilst also battling it out for the lion’s share of the US$100,000 prize pool.

This aims to capture the popular games and esports among each country, highlighting the popularity of certain titles, as well as esports and gaming trends, in various countries. The aim is to have the competition feature major influencers with a huge following.

The best-performing influencers from WCG Challenge will band together for WCG Rivals – a tournament with even higher stakes, with game competitions having a prize pool of roughly US$120,000 on the line.

The WCG 2024 Festival will serve as the focal point for both the WCG Challenge and WCG Rivals.

Organizers also noted that the WCG will also have different tours across multiple countries.

“WCG 2024 will also make appearances in Korea, Japan, the United States, the Philippines, and Vietnam, as we plan to spread our wings across the globe. And it all starts with the KOREA Challenge, set to kick off on March 20st! The first step is the Tekken Challenge with Korea’s representative influencer ‘Bongjun’! We ask for your interest and participation,” the announcement ends.

Titles to be played are to be announced at a later date.

Indonesia is no stranger to hosting major international esports events – the most recent ones being the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang M4 World Championship in January 2023 and Dota 2’s The Bali Major, which was held from June to July of 2023.
