In its eagerness to prevent cheaters, Valve released an update on February 27 to end the popular Overwolf addon in Dota 2. Remember that this addon allowed players to gain an advantage over their rivals, as it allowed them to know which heroes they used the most in their games.

Overwolf had already caused different concerns among members of the Dota 2 community, as many considered it is cheating. While it wasn’t something that directly affected gameplay or anything like that, the fact that you could ban your opponents’ favorite heroes could be considered a significant advantage.

Valve releases patch to end Overwolf addon

In the update last Monday, February 27, Valve released a patch that would put an end to the controversial Overwolf addon. This addon operated in a gray area, as it could use entirely public data for assistance when drafting heroes before a game.

While this could be favorable for the games of experienced players in high ranks, it was a nightmare for beginners. These players, who have little time in the game and do not know how to use all the heroes very well, could not use their favorites in the games. However, thanks to this patch, all this has been eliminated.

This comes after years of discussions by Valve and community members, and finally, Valve decided to take action. The program cannot track players’ Dota 2 history when selecting heroes.

As we mentioned, this addon provided help to players when making hero selections but had absolutely no influence on gameplay. With Valve closing this door, the uninstall numbers for this addon may be high.

February 27 patch notes

Below, we will show the February 27 Dota 2 patch notes according to Valve.

  • The “record” command in matchmaking games was disabled. In real-time, this was used to record a local demo with information that was not intended to be visible to the client during a match. Demo recording is still available in local rooms to enable SFM usage and community content creation.
  • Many console commands during matchmaking games that could be used to obtain internal client state data were disabled. For example, “dota_lobby_debug,” “cl_dota_ambient_tree_shake_cooldown” and “dev_simulate_gcdown” no longer work in these games. While “ping,” “disconnect,” and “dota_toggle_autoattack” continue to do so.
  • It is no longer possible to access player profiles during the preparation phase in matchmaking games. They can still be accessed after the selection phase is over.

Reports claim that the addon still works in Dota 2

The Dota 2 update, released a few hours ago, seems not to have affected the performance of the Overwolf program. Streamer Henrik AdmiralBulldog Anberg discovered this during his Twitch broadcast.

The patch was supposed to prevent Overwolf from getting information about favorite enemy heroes and other necessary stats during character selection. However, in practice, the utility still produces all the necessary data.
