Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a crossover fighting game featuring over 80 characters from years of renowned Nintendo along with third-party games. So many fighters to pick from – it can be overwhelming – particularly for a newcomer to the series.

In case you are a newcomer to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, begin with some simpler, much more simple characters with simple movesets and gameplay types. Picking up a complex fighter like Sheik or technical combo master like Fox right away could lead to a frustrating experience as you try to learn the fundamentals.

To make your Smash debut easier, we have developed a playlist of the easiest fighters to play from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s roster. These characters are great for understanding Smash’s core mechanics without getting lost in overly complicated controls or difficult techniques.

Kirby

maxresdefault

The adorable pink puffball is among gaming’s most memorable mascots and a good option for Super Smash Bros. rookies. Kirby’s moveset is pretty basic – he uses his iconic copy abilities against opponents and steals their neutral special moves.

He has great air mobility so getting back onto the stage is a breeze. Simple but effective offense and defense are provided by moves such as the Stone Transformation and Hammer Flip. World of Light mode features Kirby as the first character you control, so expect plenty of practice time with his skills.

King K. Rool

KING K ROOL

It might look like a terrifying new heavy hitter from the Donkey Kong universe, but King K. Rool has some seriously handy tools for newbies. Offense: His trademark Crown body slam and blunderbuss long-range projectile offer solid offense with few inputs.

What makes K. Rool such a great player to learn about is his armor mechanic that lets him grind opponents to a pulp. His down special can also be countered to punish aggressive opponents. New Smash players will be able to pick up King K. Rool with his basic yet brutally effective kit.

Isabelle

ISABELLE

Another relative newcomer, little Isabelle from Animal Crossing has some added skills that make her a good choice for those just starting. Her side special Fishing Rod can long-range and catch hit stun to harass enemies from a safe distance.

Isabelle recovers from one of the best – with her Balloons providing the maximum air mobility to get back on stage. She has just enough cool tools like the Pocket for looting items and the Lloyd Rocket ledge attack to keep you busy as you progress through the basics. Isabelle favors basics over complexity.

Toon Link/Young Link

TOON LINK

Both the cartoony Toon Link and the younger Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask hero represent the classic Zelda franchise. While standard adult Link does feature some fancy new fancy remote bomb tricks adapted from Breath of the Wild, Toon and Young offer a more traditional Link experience that is great for novices.

It has all the familiar tools – bombs, arrows, boomerangs – to play keep away before you go into the kill with your sword. With such small statures and speed, Toon and Young Link can be evasive while teaching you movement basics. Their bare-bones kits make picking up basics such as spacing and whiff punishing surprisingly intuitive.

Richter

RICHTER

When it comes to applying intense offensive zoning pressure, Richter from the Castlevania series has everything you need. His signatures are made for the novice – with potent cross and axe projectiles to hold position; holy water to break up approaches; and a long-range whip to wallow opponents.

Unlike his semi-clone Simon who requires specific whip hit confirmations, Richter deals consistent damage wherever his weapon strikes. This allows more time to work on spacing, spacing, and movement basics. Richter’s only flaw is that he has no recovery options if knocked off stage.

Mario

MARIO

Nintendo’s mascot plumber is always a hit. Mario is a surprisingly balanced fighter – combining speed, power, combo ability and kill power in a simple-to-understand package – ideal for the new Super Smash Bros.

His moveset includes edge guarding staple Cape, zoning staple Fireball, and combos into his slick up-air juggle chains, F.L.U.D.D. Mario’s simplicity means new players can focus on fundamental mechanics such as short hop aerials, tech chasing, and defensive options without having to worry about overly complicated techniques. He’s the original video game hero so naturally that was a starting point.

With these easy fighters under your belt, you will be all set for all the sweet chaos and competitive activity of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. With your skill level rising, you can start exploring other players in the varied roster and experience the crossover action of this classic fighting game franchise.
