One of the best CS:GO players today, FaZe Clan rifler Robin “ropz” Kool, was somewhat concerned about the possible change to the MR12 format in Counter-Strike 2.

New in the CS2 beta updates is a game mode where the format is MR12 instead of the familiar MR15. For those who don’t know, this is a format (identical to VALORANT) where games end in 13 rounds instead of 16, as has been customary in Counter-Strike history. However, ropz doesn’t quite agree with this change, as the 23-year-old Estonian rifler says there would be a lot of “randomness” in CS2’s top-level events with this format.

Ropz says he doesn’t agree with the format change to MR12

In one of his latest streams, ropz answered some of his fans’ questions regarding the possible format change to MR12. As a result, ropz said that he hopes that won’t happen, as the player has negative thoughts regarding that format.

Ropz claims this change could generate many surprising and unpredictable results in Tier 1 tournaments. In addition, he also said that the MR12 format would make the pistol round much more important, so a change would have to be made to the game’s economy so that teams would not have an advantage for only winning one or two rounds by starting maps.

Ropz said he does not like this format, but if the community wants to try it, let them do it. In addition, the 23-year-old Estonian said that pistol rounds can’t have that much impact on a game, so “they would have to get rid of pistol rounds.”

Explanation of ropz’s views

Let’s look at an example to explain ropz’s point of view:

If a team wins the pistol round and wins the next two rounds (as generally happens in the CS:GO scene), the team would have a significant advantage of 3 rounds won. On the other hand, if the same team wins the pistol round at the change of sides and the other two rounds, they would have 6 won rounds of advantage, which is complicated to come back from in an MR12 format.

As a result, this team would have to win only 7 more rounds to win the match. Because of this, we could see many unexpected results and, above all, a wave of surprises.

blameF also gives his point of view

Another professional and experienced player in the CS:GO scene, Benjamin “blameF” Bremer, also gave his opinion regarding the possible switch to the MR12 format.

blameF, unlike ropz, has positive opinions regarding this format, but he also makes caveats that align with what FaZe Clan’s Rifler mentioned. The Astralis IGL said that should the MR12 format be implemented. Developers should carefully handle it, as “undesirable results” may occur in tournaments.

Finally, all this is mere speculation since Valve has not commented on the matter and, above all, still has us on tenterhooks regarding the official release of CS2. The arrival of this long-awaited CS:GO sequel is (still) scheduled for summer 2023, but Valve still does not indicate that this will happen soon.
