Kuro “KuroKy” Takhasomi left Team Liquid after The International 2019. He finished that tournament in second place after losing to OG in the Grand Final and went on to create his own esports team. His teammates were loyal to him and decided to join him.

Up until that point, KuroKy had played in three TI Grand Finals, winning one of them in 2017. But as soon as he created Nigma, which later became Nigma Galaxy, he went from being one of the world’s best to almost complete irrelevancy.

Nigma Galaxy’s failures

Nigma Galaxy has yet to participate in an edition of The International. In 2021 they tried and failed. The same thing happened in 2021, even though their roster looked formidable on paper.

It seems that more and more, Dota 2 is becoming a game of strategy in which individuals can’t do much if the overall plan is not strong enough to ensure success. Imagine having players like Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan and Amer “Miracle-“ Al-Barkawi on the same team and not managing to qualify for Majors.

In 2022, Nigma Galaxy was even relegated to Western Europe’s Division II after finishing Tour 2 in eighth place in the first division. For a few months after that, people expected KuroKy to step down and retire from the game. But he managed to make a comeback in Tour 3, winning the battle in Division II and rejoining the first division.

However, his team was not capable of surviving the regional qualifiers for The International 11. This means that KuroKy and the rest of his squad haven’t participated in this tournament for more than three years.

In October 2023, Kuro hopes to return to The International after a four-year absence. The man is probably hungrier than ever for a qualification and a good result.

KuroKy’s decision to continue playing for Nigma Galaxy

Nigma Galaxy was KuroKy’s idea and he’s obviously not going to give up on his project that easily. He probably feels that the skill gap between his team and the rest of the Western European competitors is not that big. And he’s almost certainly right.

We rarely see Dota 2 teams failing for several consecutive years and not making big roster changes. But Nigma are quite special in that regard. Just like OG, they function on the principle of friendship. And they can afford it, since everyone on the team is a millionaire thanks to the previous trophies they’ve won.

In 2023, KuroKy is expected to make one last attempt to save his team and his career. At the age of 30, he doesn’t have much time left anyway.
