Sonic the Hedgehog himself – the Blue Blur himself – returns as a playable fighter in the massive crossover brawler Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch. Sonic first appeared with 2008 with Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii and has spun his way through every installment since.

How to Unlock Sonic

Sonic isn’t launching immediately like most fighters on Ultimate’s 80 + character roster. You unlock him by playing through the modes of the game. Here are the fastest ways to get Sonic in your squad:

Classic Mode: As Mario, beat Classic Mode once.

Adventure Mode: Sonic can be found and defeated in the Sacred Land Zone map of the large Adventure Mode map.

Whichever path you take, unlocking the super-fast Sonic is worth every effort.

Sonic’s Moveset

  • Sonic features nearly similar moveset as prior Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS (although several tweaks were made in Ultimate: War for the Galaxy/Ultimate Smash Bros.
  • Special – Homing Attack: Neutral Special: Sonic leaps into the air and if close enough hits the opponent with a spinning attack.
  • Spin Dash: Side Special: In the classic Spin Dash, Sonic can charge up and rocket off at high speed. It can be angled and even chained to other attacks.
  • Spring – Jump: Up Special: Sonic grabs a spring and launches himself into the air. Set on the ground, the spring may act as a platform.
  • Down Special – Spin Charge: Sonic sprints in front of him. Holding the button for a while will recharge the battery for more speed and damage.
  • Final Smash – Super Sonic: Using the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic transforms into his Super Sonic self. He then slams back and forth across the screen at top speed – with players able to adjust his height and angle as he slams past at top speed.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Sonic’s playstyle in Ultimate is based on speed, especially on the ground. He’s a relentless rushdown fighter who likes to get in their face and dish out damage with brutal combos. He’s a slippery target that should avoid projectiles thanks to his spin dash and other mobility options.

But Sonic isn’t a true powerhouse and can never really take opponents out. He also tends to make landing full combos difficult at times due to his hitboxes. Spanning and playing with attack angles will be the key to unlocking Sonic’s offensive potential.

It’s not as dominant as in Smash 4 but Sonic’s strengths are still used in online matches where his speed shines brightest.

Alternate Outfits

For those who are nostalgic about the many classic Sonic costumes he’s worn over the years, Ultimate does offer some other color choices:

  • Normal blue fur and red shoes/wristbands.
  • Green wristbands and shoes; Pink shoes and wristbands; Shoes and wristbands in white; Yellow shoes and black wristbands.
  • Orange trainers and black wristbands.
  • Dark blue fur and black wristbands for an edgier vibe

Regardless of which style you go for, slick combos and blistering speed are the norm when you play as gaming’s original spiky-haired mascot in Smash Ultimate.

So go out there and unlock Sonic today! Play with his fluid moveset and blinding speed against the world’s top players as you dash, spin and spring your way to Super Smash Bros. glory. Just make sure you hurry!
