Less than two months ago, Heroic and Team Vitality played in the Grand Final of IEM Rio. Vitality won that match but the scores were very close: 13-16 on Vertigo and 12-16 on Inferno. Then, at the Paris Major, Heroic got eliminated in the semifinals while Vitality went on to win their first Major trophy.

Now, at BLAST Premier: Spring Final, the two best teams in the world will meet again in the Grand Final. Their path to this last match has been exciting to watch and full of difficult moments. But all of that is nothing compared to what awaits them.

Heroic’s run

Heroic started the tournament with an easy victory against Complexity: 16-7 on Inferno and 16-6 on Nuke. For Casper “cadiaN” Moller, this match felt like a warm-up. And it was.

In the winners match, Heroic defeated FaZe Clan, who had won against Astralis (2-0). The match was very fun to watch but unfortunately for FaZe, they lost their map pick and then got obliterated on Heroic’s. The scores were 19-16 on Nuke and 16-10 on Inferno.

Just like in the first match, Martin “stavn” Lund had an excellent performance and his K-D score proved to be enough to win.

Because of these two consecutive victories, Heroic qualified for the semifinals, where they had a relatively easy opponent. Imperial Esports somehow managed to defeat Vitality in the group stage and qualified for the quarterfinals, where they won another match against Complexity.

Thanks to Imperial’s surprisingly good run, Heroic had an easy way to the Grand Final. Or so it seemed. In reality, the Danes struggled to win the first map (16-13), lost the second map (11-16) and then nearly lost the third map as well, after having a 11-4 lead. The final score on this map was 19-17!

Vitality’s run

For Vitality, the tournament started with a defeat against Imperial (0-2), followed by a victory against Cloud9 (2-0).

In the quarterfinals, Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut and his teammates had to beat FaZe Clan, which proved to be quite challenging: 19-17 on Anubis and 16-8 on Mirage.

In the semifinals, another monster had to be slain: G2 Esports. The scores were 16-11, 9-16, 12-16. Luckily for Vitality, almost the entire team was in great shape and contributed a lot to the team’s overall success.
