Zynga, the mobile and social gaming giant, made its forays by moving from Web3 and blockchain initiatives. The company earlier forayed into blockchain gaming and developed something known as Sugartown, which made use of NFTs and the whole decentralized game idea. But subsequently, Zynga even offloaded its Web3 initiatives, such as Sugartown, to D20 Labs, a group founded by Matt Wolf, who previously worked as Zynga’s Vice President of Web3 and Blockchain Gaming, along with other former Zynga Web3 team members.
CEO Frank Gibeau stated that blockchain and its technologies are “interesting,” and it’s not that the company didn’t enjoy it, but the market for that space was too complicated and early for Zynga’s scale. There wasn’t an easy, clear cut way for Zynga to do something huge and continue, so they decided to change gears.
Zynga Negotiates for Discord and Telegram

Rather than holding onto Web3, Zynga has been targeting platforms such as Discord and Telegram. These messaging services, originally designed for chatting, have been evolving into homes away from home where individuals play games, compete with each other, and socialize in communities. This is right in Zynga’s wheelhouse, since social, casual gaming is their bailiwick.
Steps On Discord

Zynga’s initial major initiative was taking “Tiny Royale: ZOMBIES!” to Discord exclusively, trying out the idea of developing and playing games in a chat application rather than a standalone game environment. Although Zynga has not publicly disclosed about brand new games arriving to Discord and Telegram in the immediate future, the CEO hinted at there being more in the pipeline and Zynga is going to take its games where people are already spending their time online.
Why Messaging Apps Make Sense
And now, chat apps such as Telegram and Discord are not merely for conversation. There are bots and rich media and ways to play together. For Zynga, marketing to these types of apps has several key benefits:
- Access to Highly Active Networks: Discord and Telegram boast millions of highly active users who organize themselves into close-knit communities.
- Fewer App Store Dependencies: By shifting away from mobile-exclusive releases, Zynga escapes app store congestion and fees.
- Rapid Iteration: Such websites enable developers to rapidly test and adjust games, something which fits with Zynga’s open nature to experiment and learn quickly.
The Road Ahead for Zynga

As these platforms continue to add features and expand in size, Zynga’s move to port its games onto these platforms may put it in a position to define the future of social gaming. The company’s trend of transitioning from Facebook games to mobile, and now to Discord and Telegram, shows that it is always looking for the next platform to access its players.
By altering its strategy and moving onto these new platforms, Zynga aims to position itself as a leader in casual and social gaming, uniting its audience in new, engaging ways as digital communities expand.
