Yooka-Laylee studio confirms layoffs

Playtonic Games, the developer of the Yooka-Laylee games, has confirmed that some of its employees have been laid off.

The company announced this on social media last Friday, following several reports from (former) employees this week. The statement does not specify how many people have been laid off.

“We have all seen how the gaming industry has changed in recent years, leaving studios in a situation where they can only survive by making painful decisions—decisions that impact the lives of many talented developers. We too are feeling the effects, and after exploring all other possible options, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to part ways with some brilliant members of the Playtonic team.”

Playtonic is currently working on Yooka-Replayee. This game revamps the 2017 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee. Players can expect improved graphics, animations, performance, and resolutions. In addition, the British company has been publishing games from other developers through Playtonic Friends since 2021.
