We finally have a break-day at Worlds 2020 and it’s time to look at the Group Stage results that have been registered so far. Initially, all the favorite teams had flawless matches against their weaker opponents, but yesterday we started to see some upsets.

Group A

Group A of Worlds 2020 has been dominated so far by G2 Esports and Suning, which is exactly what everyone expected, with one mention: Team Liquid was also regarded as a potential candidate for the 2nd place. G2 Esports is too strong to be dethroned, but the 2nd place was in question. Unfortunately for Team Liquid, they didn’t manage to win their direct encounters with Machi Esports and Suning. So they are currently 3rd – 4th with 1 win and 2 losses. What’s strange though is that they somehow defeated G2 Esports in their last match. In turn, the European team defeated both Machi Esports and Suning.

The complete results so far in Group A are the following:

  • 1st – 2nd place: G2 Esports: 2 W – 1 L
  • 1st – 2nd place: Suning: 2 W – 1 L
  • 3rd – 4th place: Machi Esports: 1 W – 2 L
  • 3rd – 4th place: Team Liquid: 1 W – 2 L

Based on what we’ve seen so far, G2 Esports and Suning remain the big favorites to survive this group and advance to the Playoffs of Worlds 2020.

Group B

Group B is by far the most undisputed group of this tournament. And that’s because DAMWON Gaming and JDG Gaming are far stronger than the other 2 opponents. DAMWON is the champion of LCK while JDG won the Spring Split in China and then almost won the Summer Split as well. In the Grand Final, they lost against Top Esports (2 – 3). So obviously, JDG has no problem winning against Rogue and PSG Talon. But they have a very rough time against DAMWON.

The complete results for this group up until this point are the following:

  • 1st place: DAMWON Gaming: 3 W – 0 L
  • 2nd place: JD Gaming: 2 W – 1 L
  • 3rd place: Rogue: 1 W – 2 L
  • 4th place: PSG Talon: 0 W – 3 L

Group C

In Group C of Worlds 2020, 3 teams have the exact same score. As I and most analysts predicted, TSM choked from day 1 while the other 3 teams went side by side, winning against most of their opponents but having one nemesis. It’s a rock-paper-scissors game. Gen.G Esports defeated LGD Gaming. LGD Gaming defeated Fnatic. And Fnatic defeated Gen.G Esports. It’s absolutely beautiful, but the problem is that we have no idea who the two survivors will be.

The complete results in this group for the first half of the Group Stage were the following:

  • 1st – 3rd place: Fnatic: 2 W – 1 L
  • 1st – 3rd place: Gen.G Esports: 2 W – 1 L
  • 1st – 3rd place: LGD Gaming: 2 W – 1 L
  • 4th place: Team SoloMid: 0 W – 3 L

Group D

Group D is similar to Group B, in the sense that it’s clear which teams are going to make it. Almost without a doubt, Top Esports and DragonX will be the ones to advance to the Playoffs. Top Esports for sure, while DragonX with a probability of 90%. These two teams are among the strongest in China in South Korea, two regions that are superior at this point to the rest.

The partial results in Group D of Worlds 2020 are the following:

  • 1st place: Top Esports: 3 W – 0 L
  • 2nd place: DragonX: 2 W – 1 L
  • 3rd place: FlyQuest: 1 W – 2 L
  • 4th place: Unicorns Of Love: 0 W – 3 L
