Worlds 2020 had a Group Stage full of beautiful matches and a few upsets here and there. But in the end, the top contenders that were expected to survive this stage managed to do exactly that and qualified for the Playoffs. In this article, I’ll take a brief look at the results.

Group A

In Group A of Worlds 2020, there were 3 real competitors when the Group Stage began: G2 Esports, Suning, and Team Liquid. It was obvious to everyone that G2 was going to do just fine. But nobody knew exactly who the second qualified team was going to be. Eventually, that team was Suning. And in fact, the Chinese competitor won the group by beating G2 in the tiebreaker. Liquid finished in 3rd place with 3 wins and 3 losses. It was a good try, but two other competitors were simply better.

The complete results for this group were the following:

  • 1st place: Suning: 4 W – 2 L
  • 2nd place: G2 Esports: 4 W – 2 L
  • 3rd place: Team Liquid: 3 W – 3 L
  • 4th place: Machi Esports: 1 W – 5 L

The sad thing about Machi’s only victory is that it came against Liquid and practically eliminated them. I’m sure that Jensen is still crying about it, but that’s life.

Group B

Group B of Worlds 2020 was almost predetermined, due to the massive skill difference between its top 2 and its bottom 2 teams. DAMWON Gaming, which is expected to play in the Grand Final, had no trouble against its rivals with one exception: JD Gaming. Although it won the first match, as everyone expected, the second match did not go according to plan. The complete results for this group are listed below:

  • 1st place: DAMWON Gaming: 5 W – 1 L
  • 2nd place: JD Gaming: 4 W – 2 L
  • 3rd place: PSG Talon: 2 W – 4 L
  • 4th place: Rogue: 1 W – 5 L

Group C

In Group C, Gen.G Esports was the big winner, followed closely by Fnatic. Initially, these two teams along with LGD Gaming had the exact same record: 2 W – 1 L. But in the second half of the Group Stage, LGD Gaming lost versus both of them and was eliminated. As everyone expected, TSM choked completely and did not manage to win a single game.

The complete results for this group of Worlds 2020 are the following:

  • 1st place: Gen.G Esports: 5 W – 1 L
  • 2nd place: Fnatic: 4 W – 2 L
  • 3rd place: LGD Gaming: 3 W – 3 L
  • 4th place: TSM: 0 W – 6 L

Group D

Just like Group C, Group D was highly disputed. At least when it comes to the battle for the 2nd place. Top Esports had an easy run but still lost one match against DragonX. And FlyQuest almost managed to steal DRX’s place in the Playoffs. Overall, Group D of Worlds 2020 ended with the following results:

  • 1st place: Top Esports: 5 W – 1 L
  • 2nd place: DragonX: 4 W – 2 L
  • 3rd place: FlyQuest: 3 W – 3 L
  • 4th place: Unicorns of Love: 0 W – 6 L
