Overwatch 2 just kind of threw everything out the window with its new limited-time event: Overwatch 2 Hacks & Hijinx. It started July 15 and runs until July 28. It’s a 6v6 Control mode, but not in the usual way. This time, 8-bit Sombra is “glitching the system,” and every single round is full of wild, random modifiers that can turn matches completely upside down.
So if you’re wondering what’s actually going on in this event and whether it’s worth jumping in before it ends, let’s go over the details.
Chaos Every Round
At first glance, it’s still Overwatch 2’s standard Control mode—teams fight to hold a point. But the real twist is that each round has two random modifiers selected from a pool of sixteen. These modifiers stack and change how every game plays. Sometimes dramatically.
One round you might be floating around with low gravity while landing aerial shots, and the next you’re suddenly half your usual size, cloaking while crouching, or just punching people off the map with supercharged melee. You really don’t know what to expect each time, which is kind of the fun of Overwatch 2 Hacks & Hijinx.
Here are a few of the modifiers you might run into:
MINI MAXING – All heroes shrink 50%, and lose some health. So it’s harder to shoot them, but they also go down quick.
LIE LOW – You turn invisible when crouching. But if you shoot or move too close, the cloak drops.
CHARGE PACK – Health packs also charge your ult. Pretty strong if you’re sticking to health pack routes.
POWER PUNCH – Melee knocks enemies back hard. Like, really hard. You can send people flying off the map with the right angle.
BUFF HUNT – Every minute, a random player gets juiced up. If you kill them, you steal their buff. It’s kinda like mini-boss mode.
EXPLOSIVE – When you die, you explode and damage nearby players. Makes death a bit more… dramatic.
BERSERKERS – No healing over time, but the lower your health, the faster your abilities and fire rate.
There’s a total of 16 different modifiers and every round you get two of them, so no two matches really feel alike. Sometimes it’s balanced-ish, sometimes it’s pure chaos. And that’s exactly what makes Overwatch 2 Hacks & Hijinx a blast to mess around in.
Why Bother Playing It?
Besides being ridiculous and kind of fun, there’s also some solid rewards for playing. If you complete the event challenges, you can earn:
- Up to 55,000 XP for your Battle Pass
- Some 8-bit themed stuff like a spray, weapon charm, and a player icon
- One Epic Loot Box
- The “Hackerman” title
It’s nothing game-changing, but it’s enough of a bonus if you’re already enjoying the mode or just want to knock out some XP quickly.
Conclusion
Overwatch 2 Hacks & Hijinx is probably the most unhinged mode we’ve had in the game in a while. It’s unbalanced, kind of ridiculous, but also fresh and funny if you just want a break from the usual comp or quickplay grind. If you’re the type who enjoys weird game modes and goofy mechanics, you’ll probably have a good time here.
And hey, it’s limited. After July 28, it’s gone at least for now. Whether you’re punching someone off the control point or just got exploded by a tiny invisible Genji, Overwatch 2 Hacks & Hijinx easily delivers some of the most “what even was that?” moments this game’s had in a long time.
