New updates came in the Rocket League. Psyonix added features to the Rocket League new ranks system.
As one of the unique hybrid games on the market right now, Rocket League, attracted attention for blending soccer with cool vehicles. What even makes the game stand out is its ranking system. This June 2024, the developer announced some changes in the ranking system to make players surprised and positive at the same time
These updates will enhance the match quality and address issues such as “unintentional smurfing.” Here’s what you need to know about Rocket League new ranks.
Understanding the Rocket League Ranking System
The ranking system in Rocket League aims to categorize the players according to their performance and skill level. It assigns points to players, which is called “Matchmaking Rank (MMR)” that will determine their position in the competitive leaderboard.
The MMR increases when players win games, especially in fights against higher-ranked opponents. With this, the players will climb up in the rank ladder.
The New Ranks System: Addressing “Unintentional Smurfing”
Psyonix announced a surprising update in June 2024 to address the growing issue in competitive gaming. There has been several occurrence of “unintentional smurfing” that spoils the experience of players. It typically happens when the player’s rank does not match their actual skill level. Oftentimes, this is due to players’ absence in the playlist for a while.
Key Features of the New System
These are the features that came in the update of Psyonix’ Rocket League:
- Upward Rank Adjustment: This evaluates the player’s competitive rank on placement matches and will adjust the starting rank if it does not match the player’s skill level.
- Cross-Playlist Skill Prediction: The performance in other Competitive Playlists will serve as the basis of the player’s predicted rank. This is a solution to the issue of skill transfers between playlists.
- Specific Criteria for Adjustment: Players have to meet all three conditions to change their rank:
- Players have to complete at least ten matches in the Competitive Playlist during the previous season.
- Players did not play the current Playlist during the previous season.
- Players’ ranking is way below their predicted rank in the playlist.
- No Downward Adjustments: It can only move ranks upwards and does not apply to tournament ranks.
The Rocket League Rank Structure
The rank structure of Rocket League consists of nine rankings: Unranked, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Grand Champion, and Supersonic Legend. In each rank, excluding the unranked, there are three levels to pass before they move on to the next rank.
Players will have to accumulate points or secure win counts to pass levels I to III and eventually reach the Supersonic Legend. They will receive rewards based on their highest rank at the end of the season. The rewards may vary from cosmetic items like car accessories or decals.
Here are the ranks from lowest to highest:
- Unranked
- Bronze I, II, III
- Silver I, II, III
- Gold I, II, III
- Platinum I, II, III
- Diamond I, II, III
- Champion I, II, III

- Rookie – (Levels 1-9)
- Semi-Pro – (Levels 10-19)
- Pro – (Levels 20-29)

Conclusion
Psyonix has been doing everything to make sure that matches in Rocket League remain fair for everyone. With the new system, players’ ranking are adjusted to a rank that is appropriate with their skill level in the playlists. It hopes to prevent game mismatches which cause players’ frustrations as the game fails to bring match consistencies.
In this balanced competitive rank system of Rocket League, more players are encouraged to adopt fair play. The team also hopes that these steps will help improve further the in-game matches quality.
