Certainly, it did not betray them, as it gave them their first trophy of the year. Vitality finished IEM Cologne 2024 with a nail-biting 3-1 series on LANXESS Arena last Sunday, August 18.
A Long-Awaited Triumph
It doesn’t matter how many times you fall short; what’s important is that you’ll keep trying. Team Vitality executed the perfect comeback in IEM Cologne 2024. Earlier this year, the squad struggled to win titles in several competitions.
However, the stars may have aligned with their determination as they emerge triumphant in IEM Cologne 2024. This victory marks a milestone, especially for veteran leader Dan “apEX” Madesclaire and superstar Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut.
It is a win that solidifies Vitality’s return to form after their majestic run at the end of 2023. It was memorable for the team as they gained back-to-back victories that year.
Glorious Path
IEM Cologne 2024 immediately saw a battle of dominance for both squads from the beginning. The teams, Team Vitality and NAVI, dominated their respective group brackets by defeating some of their prominent opponents in the league.
NAVI’s impressive gameplay showed as they toppled over paIN Gaming, Astralis, and SAW to dominate Group A. Meanwhile, by defeating FURIA Esports, FaZe Clan, and MOUZ in Group B, Team Vitality gets to secure a ticket to the playoffs. As the stage continued, both teams managed to secure their places in the grand final with a sweep in the semifinal.
A Grand Final for the Ages
The opening in the Nuke brought a highly contested game between the two squads. Team Vitality fought hard against NAVI to win the overtime match 16-14. However, this win seemed to not faze the world #1 team, as they secured game two on Dust II. NAVI scored 13-10 to even out their score.
The best-of-five series continued in Mirage, where both teams displayed an intense matchup. A newly added classic in the chest box of Counter-Strike Esports matches is where the teams get tangled in triple overtime. Their extended match saw Vitality emerge victorious by a 22-20 scoreline.
With the chance to get a hold of the championship trophy increasing, Team Vitality gave everything in the Inferno battle. Their momentum from the win in Mirage helped the team achieve a convincing 13-9 victory.
ZywOo’s exceptional play played a key role in their grand finals win. With his masterclass performance shining through the series, he already cemented his title as “The French Prodigy.” He accumulated an astonishing 100 kills alone in this grand finals series.
Above all, his performance on Mirage allowed the team to secure several crucial clutches. He managed to gain 36 kills, which helped the team gain another win and confidence.
This victory serves as a core memory for the veteran leader, apEX. After going through many heartbreaks, he finally conquered his losses in LANXESS with IEM Cologne 202. His leadership and crucial shot calls were instrumental to their win.
NAVI’s Valiant Effort
The world’s top-ranked team may have fallen down a step as they neared the championship. But NAVI didn’t fail to show a great performance from the start of the tournament until the grand final. The team tried their best to closely contest maps, yet Vitality played the better game for this series.
This defeat may have cost them the chance to show a true era of dominance. However, their 2024 campaign remains decorated with victories from PGL Major Copenhagen and EWC.
Conclusion
It’s a wrap-up for this year’s highly anticipated tournament. Team Vitality stood out strong against NAVI in the grand final series to take home the championship title. This dominating performance in the best-of-five series is a witness to the incredible will and tactical skills they possess.
