Here’s an unexpected bit of news: Virtua Fighter is getting a reboot! On the one hand, it’s a legendary IP that’s well worth your time. On the other, it isn’t nearly as popular as it was in the past.

Still, it’s one of SEGA’s most recognizable properties, and with its last installment being released in 2012 (for consoles, that is), it’s about time we got a next-gen update. So what’s this all about? In short, SEGA is celebrating its 60-year anniversary, and they’ve just announced a project called “Virtua Fighter x Esports.” We’re still light on details and this, frankly, could end up being any number of things.

Still, if we have to take a fairly educated stab in the dark, we’d assume it’s a brand-new installment that’s in tune with the times. Virtua Fighter was always a fantastic game, but it was never designed (or updated) for esports. After all, 2012 was a long time ago. Back then, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were still dominating the console market. Right now, however, we’re on the brink of a brand-new generation of consoles, and SEGA wants to join in on the fun. One could argue that they made too big of a break, but better late than never.

Virtua Fighter was the very first 3D fighting game originally released on arcades. The series itself isn’t nearly as popular as, say, Street Fighter or Tekken, but that’s mostly because SEGA didn’t give it much love over the years.

Fortunately, that’s about to change.

Closing Remarks

Originally released in late 1993, Virtua Fighter is by all means an OG fighting game series. With the FGC community currently in shambles (because of COVID-19), getting a brand-new title to drool over would be of great help once 2021 comes around and things, hopefully, return to normal.

Again, there’s still so much that we don’t know about this project, but that’ll surely change over the coming weeks. In the meantime, Virtua Fighter fans can rest easy knowing that something big is right around the corner! We’ll bring you more coverage as things develop!
