VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026 has delivered a brutal opening for the host region. All four VCT China representatives lost their first Group Stage matches 0-2, leaving TYLOO, EDward Gaming, Xi Lai Gaming and JD Gaming immediately facing elimination pressure.
The Americas region had the opposite start. G2 Esports, LOUD, NRG and 100 Thieves all swept their opening opponents and completed the first round without dropping a single map.
Americas Teams Complete Perfect Opening Round
Every Americas representative won its opening best-of-three 2-0.
G2 Esports defeated TYLOO, LOUD swept EDward Gaming, NRG handled Nongshim RedForce and 100 Thieves beat T1.
The four results were:
- G2 Esports 2-0 TYLOO
- LOUD 2-0 EDward Gaming
- NRG 2-0 Nongshim RedForce
- 100 Thieves 2-0 T1
That gives Americas a combined 8-0 map record after the opening matches.
The regional comparison requires some context. None of the Americas teams faced an EMEA opponent in the opening round. Their victories instead came against teams from China and Pacific.
Even so, four consecutive sweeps give the region a strong early position in the Group Stage.
China Faces Four Elimination Paths on Home Soil
The start could hardly have been more difficult for VCT China.
TYLOO fell 0-2 against G2, EDward Gaming lost 0-2 to LOUD, Xi Lai Gaming was swept by Karmine Corp and JD Gaming lost to FUT Esports.
JD came closest to taking a map. After being heavily beaten 13-1 on the opening map against FUT, the Chinese side improved in the second but still lost 13-10.
VCT China finished the entire opening round without winning a single map.
That result does not eliminate any Chinese team yet, but every representative now enters its next series with no margin for error.
Champions Shanghai uses a double-elimination Group Stage. Two defeats mean elimination, while two wins secure progression.
EMEA Starts Strong With Three Wins
EMEA also produced a strong opening round.
FUT Esports swept JD Gaming, Karmine Corp defeated Xi Lai Gaming 2-0 and Team Vitality beat Global Esports 2-1.
Team Liquid were the only EMEA team to lose their opener.
Paper Rex defeated Liquid 2-1 in the first match of the tournament, giving Pacific its only opening-round victory.
The regional picture after the opening matches looks like this:
| Region | Series record | Map record |
|---|---|---|
| Americas | 4-0 | 8-0 |
| EMEA | 3-1 | 7-3 |
| Pacific | 1-3 | 3-7 |
| China | 0-4 | 0-8 |
These numbers only reflect the opening series and do not determine the final strength of each region.
Paper Rex Save Pacific From Winless Start
Paper Rex prevented Pacific from joining China with a winless opening round.
PRX defeated Team Liquid 2-1 after starting the series with a dominant 13-4 victory on Ascent. Liquid responded on Haven, but Paper Rex closed the deciding map on Lotus.
The Pacific region’s opening results were:
- Paper Rex 2-1 Team Liquid
- Nongshim RedForce 0-2 NRG
- T1 0-2 100 Thieves
- Global Esports 1-2 Team Vitality
Paper Rex therefore enter the winners’ side of Group C while the other Pacific teams must now survive elimination matches.
For Nongshim RedForce, the position is particularly notable. The team entered Champions after winning Masters Santiago earlier in the season but now faces a more difficult route toward the Playoffs.
NRG Begin Their Title Defense With a Sweep
Defending world champions NRG opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Nongshim RedForce.
The result keeps their attempt at consecutive Champions titles on track, although the tournament is still at an early stage.
Champions Shanghai runs from September 24 through October 18. Sixteen teams are split into four groups, with eight eventually advancing to the Playoffs.
All Group Stage matches are best-of-three.
The Playoffs begin on October 7 and use another double-elimination format. The Grand Final is scheduled for October 18.
China Now Plays Under Immediate Pressure
The next phase of the tournament will be especially important for the home region.
All four Chinese teams are now one defeat away from elimination. Playing in Shanghai provides home support, but it does not change the competitive situation created by the opening losses.
Each team must win its next series and then continue through the lower side of its group if it wants to reach the Playoffs.
For Americas, the situation is considerably more comfortable. Its four teams can qualify through their respective winners’ matches and have already created a safety margin.
Assessment
The opening round produced one of the clearest regional contrasts possible.
Americas went 4-0 in series and 8-0 in maps, while China finished 0-4 and 0-8. That is a significant opening result, but it remains only the first round of a double-elimination Group Stage.
China still has a path forward with all four teams, while the Americas teams are not yet qualified.
The more important question will be how both regions respond when the matchups become less favorable and elimination pressure increases.
For now, Champions Shanghai has started with the host region under immediate pressure and Americas holding the strongest statistical opening of any region.
