G2 Esports has now qualified for VALORANT Champions 2025 in Paris, after they defeated Xi Lai Gaming (XLG) 2-0 in the lower bracket of Masters Toronto. The win also gives them enough Championship Points, and possibly saves their spot in next year’s International League. But that’s not 100% sure yet—it depends on how 2GAME Esports ends up doing in the coming weeks.
G2 Crush XLG as They Roll Through the Series
XLG picked Icebox first, which was surprising since they barely played the map during China Stage 1. G2 also changed their setup here, leaving behind their usual comp. This time, they played double Controller, double Sentinel with jawgemo on Sage, clearly adjusting after the Tejo nerfs changed the meta.
G2 started the defense side on Icebox, and it worked great. leaf was in form early, reaching 17 kills by halftime and completely shutting down XLG. The Chinese side only got one round in the first half, with G2 taking a massive 10-1 lead. In the second half, G2 didn’t slow down. They went for a smart triple Stinger eco that beat XLG’s pistol round and closed the map easily, 13-3.

Haven was a better start for XLG. They won the first two rounds and looked more prepared. But G2 quickly responded, winning six straight rounds to lead 6-2. Rarga did manage to get an ace on an eco, which gave XLG some life, but G2 still took a 7-5 half.
leaf stayed sharp in the second half too, clutching two big rounds against Viva that broke XLG’s money. Coach hvoya tried a timeout to reset, and XLG got three rounds in a row. But then G2’s coach JoshRT called his own timeout, and G2 quickly regrouped to win the last two rounds, ending Haven 13-8 and the series 2-0.
XLG ends their run at the Masters Toronto in 7th–8th place, earning $35,000. But for a team that dominated China recently, this early loss will raise eyebrows. The team’s late roster swaps and strange map choices didn’t help them either.
G2’s Spot in League Still at Risk If 2GAME Delivers
With this win, G2 now has 18 Championship Points—after winning Americas Kickoff, Stage 1, and second place in Masters Bangkok—which qualifies them for Champions 2025. But there’s still a chance they lose their International League spot.
If 2GAME Esports manages to make Champions—either through Masters or LCQ—and also finish top two in Stage 2 Americas, then they could replace G2 in the League. That path looks unlikely, though, based on 2GAME’s current form. G2’s IGL Jacob ‘valyn’ Batio joked about it, saying: “My brothers on 2G, I’m sorry, but I’m hoping you guys lose so we can stay in Ascension or VCT next year.”
G2, who were previously on The Guard roster, entered the league by winning Ascension Americas 2023. After The Guard left esports, G2 picked up the players. Since then, they’ve been one of the most stable teams in Americas, and are still chasing their first international title.
RRQ Also Eliminated After Falling to FNATIC
Over in another elimination match, FNATIC beat RRQ 2-1 in a chaotic series. FNATIC started strong on Lotus, playing a Killjoy comp that beat out RRQ’s Vyse. crashies and Chronicle both played well, and FNATIC won 13-5 after taking a 9-3 first-half lead.
RRQ hit back on Haven, using a double Duelist comp with Jemkin on Yoru and Monyet on Neon. That risky setup paid off—Jemkin dropped 18 kills in the first half, and RRQ stormed to a 10-2 lead. Even though FNATIC took the second-half pistol, RRQ closed the map 13-6.

The final map was Ascent. FNATIC brought in a double Sentinel setup with Alfajer on Chamber. The start was shaky, but they eventually pulled ahead with another 9-3 half. RRQ won the pistol but couldn’t keep the momentum. After a key play from Alfajer in round 17, FNATIC shut the door, finishing 13-5. crashies stood out again with a 1.33 rating and the best KAST score of the match.
RRQ exits without a single series win at Masters Toronto. Like XLG, the top Pacific seed also struggled to keep up internationally despite strong regional runs.
G2 now continues its lower bracket run. They will face the loser of Sentinels vs Paper Rex, a match set for June 16. Fans can watch it live on the official VCT YouTube and Twitch channels, or at the Enercare Centre in Toronto.
With Champions secured and good form on their side, G2 seems ready for what’s next. But with the tournament heating up, every match from here on will be a serious test.
