VALORANT Characters List: All Agents by Role and Release Order

VALORANT now has one of the most recognisable character rosters in competitive shooters. Riot Games’ tactical FPS launched with a relatively small group of agents, but the roster has grown steadily across new Episodes and Acts. Each character brings a unique ability kit, a defined role and a place in the wider VALORANT lore.

At the moment, VALORANT has 28 playable agents. They are split into four main roles: Duelists, Controllers, Initiators and Sentinels. Riot has also teased Agent 30, who appears to be connected to Zagreb, Croatia, although the character has not been fully revealed yet.

How Many Agents Are in VALORANT?

There are currently 28 playable agents in VALORANT. However, the game’s internal agent numbers already go beyond that because those numbers are tied to VALORANT lore rather than the number of playable characters.

Agent 30 was briefly teased during the Masters Santiago trailer. In the cinematic, Killjoy and Clove are shown tracking a new agent, with coordinates pointing toward Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. That has led to strong speculation that the next VALORANT character could be Croatian.

Riot has not officially confirmed all details about Agent 30 yet, but the character is expected to expand the roster once again and could potentially arrive as a Controller.

All VALORANT Agents by Role

VALORANT agents are divided into four roles. Each role has a clear function within a team composition, although the exact impact of each agent can change depending on the current meta, map pool and balance updates.

Controllers are designed to block sightlines, control areas and help teams execute or retake sites. Duelists are usually the first agents into fights and are built around taking space. Initiators help create openings with scouting, flashes or disruption. Sentinels focus on defence, site anchoring and information control.

Controller Agents in VALORANT

VALORANT currently has six Controller agents. These characters are essential for controlling the flow of a round and shaping how both teams move through the map.

Brimstone is listed as Agent 01 and was part of the original beta roster. Viper, Agent 02, also launched during the beta and remains one of the most important smoke-based agents in several metas. Omen, Agent 03, is another original Controller and has stayed relevant thanks to his flexible teleport and smoke kit.

Astra joined later as Agent 16, bringing a more strategic global utility style to the role. Harbor, Agent 21, added water-based utility from India. Clove, Agent 25, became the sixth Controller and introduced a more aggressive approach to the class.

Duelist Agents in VALORANT

Duelists are the most aggressive characters in VALORANT and are usually expected to take early fights, create space and open rounds for their team.

Phoenix, Agent 09, and Jett, Agent 10, were both part of the beta roster. Raze, Agent 12, also launched during beta and remains one of the most explosive agents in the game. Reyna, Agent 11, arrived at launch and quickly became one of the most popular ranked agents thanks to her self-sufficient playstyle.

Yoru, Agent 15, added deception and teleport-based plays, while Neon, Agent 19, introduced extreme speed to the role. Iso, Agent 24, brought a duel-focused kit from China, and Waylay, Agent 28, became the latest Duelist addition from Thailand.

Initiator Agents in VALORANT

Initiators are designed to help teams start fights on favourable terms. They can reveal enemies, flash opponents, break setups or force defenders out of strong positions.

Sova, Agent 06, and Breach, Agent 13, were both part of the beta roster. Skye, Agent 14, later joined from Australia and added a mix of flashes, healing and scouting utility. KAY/O, Agent 17, brought suppression mechanics to VALORANT, directly limiting enemy abilities.

Fade, Agent 20, joined as a Turkish Initiator focused on tracking and pressure. Gekko, Agent 22, added a more playful creature-based kit from the United States. Tejo, Agent 27, became the Colombian Initiator on the roster.

Sentinel Agents in VALORANT

Sentinels are often the defensive backbone of a VALORANT team. They can lock down sites, watch flanks, slow pushes and gather information.

Cypher, Agent 05, and Sage, Agent 07, were both part of the beta roster. Killjoy, Agent 04, joined shortly after launch and became one of the most iconic defensive agents in the game. Chamber, Agent 18, later brought a weapon-focused approach to the role.

Deadlock, Agent 23, added Norwegian defensive utility, while Vyse, Agent 26, introduced a more trap-heavy style. Veto, Agent 29, is the most recent Sentinel and comes from Senegal.

VALORANT Agent Release Order

VALORANT launched its beta with ten agents: Brimstone, Viper, Omen, Cypher, Sova, Sage, Phoenix, Jett, Raze and Breach. Many of those original characters remain important in competitive play even years later.

The release timeline below shows how the roster expanded over time.

Why VALORANT Agent Numbers Do Not Match the Roster

One of the more confusing details about VALORANT is that the agent numbers do not perfectly match the number of playable characters. That is because agent numbers are connected to the game’s lore.

The numbers represent the order in which characters joined the VALORANT Protocol on Alpha Earth. Brimstone is VP-01 and Viper is VP-02, making them the first two agents in the Protocol. However, some agents with higher numbers were already playable during the beta, while others with lower numbers were added later.

This is why Breach, who is Agent 13, was already available in the beta, while Killjoy, Agent 04, was added after launch. Reyna is Agent 11 but arrived at full launch rather than during beta.

The biggest mystery is Agent 8.

The Mystery Around VALORANT Agent 8

Agent 8, also known as VP-08, has still not been revealed. Riot has kept the identity of this missing character hidden for years, making Agent 8 one of the longest-running mysteries in VALORANT lore.

The character’s absence is the main reason why the number of playable agents does not match the agent numbering system. For example, Veto is Agent 29, but there are only 28 playable agents in the game.

Riot has teased Agent 8 several times, but never confirmed when or whether the character will become playable. During a Reddit AMA in 2021, VALORANT Narrative Lead Joe Killeen gave a cryptic answer when asked about Agent 8’s possible release, saying the character would return “as soon as they get back.”

Clove also references the mystery in one of their voice lines, mentioning an empty locker at base with a scratched-out 08. That line has only added more fuel to speculation around the missing agent.

Scrapped VALORANT Agents From Early Development

Several scrapped VALORANT agent concepts have also surfaced through early development files and datamining. Riot has not officially confirmed these characters as cancelled agents, so they should be treated as unofficial pieces of development history.

One of them was called Crusader and may have been an early version of Breach, with flash and stun mechanics that were apparently connected to the Controller role during development.

Another was Joules, a possible precursor to Killjoy. Early data suggested that Joules may have had abilities such as a Shock Grenade and Seeker Bolt.

A third concept, Shatter, appeared to include a decoy ability that could create a clone. That has led to speculation that Shatter may have influenced Yoru or even Phoenix in some form.

Who Is the Next VALORANT Agent?

The next VALORANT agent is expected to be Agent 30. The strongest clue so far comes from the Masters Santiago teaser, where the coordinates shown in the cinematic point toward Zagreb, Croatia.

The teaser also shows a device that resembles Brimstone’s Stim Beacon when the barrier opens at the end of the trailer. Since Riot has recently released one Duelist, two Sentinels and one Initiator, many players believe the next agent could be a Controller.

That remains speculation until Riot officially reveals the character. The Masters Santiago Grand Final is expected to be the key moment for more details.

VALORANT’s Agent Roster Keeps Expanding

VALORANT’s character roster has become one of the game’s strongest features. Every new agent adds more than just another ability kit. New releases also expand Riot’s sci-fi lore, shift team compositions and create fresh questions for both ranked players and the esports scene.

For most players, the most exciting part of any new agent is the ability kit. A new Controller, Duelist, Sentinel or Initiator can quickly change how maps are played and how professional teams approach the meta.

With Agent 30 already being teased, VALORANT’s roster is far from finished. Riot still has plenty of room to expand the Protocol, answer the mystery of Agent 8 and keep the game’s tactical meta moving forward.
