Riot Orders Wired Mice After Technical Problems Hit VALORANT Champions Shanghai

Riot Games has introduced an unusual hardware restriction at VALORANT Champions Shanghai after repeated interference caused technical pauses during the world championship.

Players have been asked to temporarily use wired mouse connections while Riot works to replace the custom metal desks being used on stage. The tournament organizer says the measure is intended to minimize further disruption, although changing peripherals during the most important VALORANT event of the year creates another challenge for competitors.

Metal Desks Linked to Wireless Interference

The issue has been traced to the custom competition desks used at Champions Shanghai.

According to Riot’s explanation, the metal construction appears to be interfering with wireless peripherals. The resulting connection problems have contributed to repeated technical pauses during matches.

Riot is now planning to replace the desks with versions made from a different material.

Until that happens, players have been asked to connect their mice using cables. Riot noted that several competitors had already independently switched to wired setups before the request was introduced.

The temporary measures include:

  • Players being asked to use wired mouse connections
  • Custom metal competition desks being replaced
  • Riot continuing to investigate interference during matches
  • Existing tournament rules remaining in effect during technical incidents

Riot acknowledged that the situation has not met the standards it expects for either players or viewers.

Changing a Mouse Setup Is Not a Minor Adjustment

Switching from wireless to wired play may sound like a simple solution, but professional VALORANT players are extremely sensitive to changes in their setups.

Mouse weight, cable resistance, positioning and movement are all connected to muscle memory developed across thousands of hours of practice.

Riot itself acknowledged that peripheral settings can directly affect how players perform and described the wired-mouse solution as an imperfect temporary measure.

Many modern professional players use wireless gaming mice because they eliminate cable drag while maintaining competitive response times.

Forcing a wired connection therefore reduces the risk of interference but potentially changes how a player’s normal setup feels during matches.

Issue Riot’s response
Wireless interference Wired mouse connections requested
Suspected cause Custom metal competition desks
Long-term solution Replace desks with different material
Tournament status Matches continue
End date for restriction Not announced

Riot has not confirmed when the replacement desks will be installed or when players will be able to return to unrestricted wireless setups.

FUT vs 100 Thieves Incident Raises Stakes

The technical problems became particularly controversial during the Champions series between FUT Esports and 100 Thieves.

During the second round on Split, FUT player Yusuf “xeus” Doğan Gözgen encountered a technical problem during a 2v1 situation and was unable to fire his weapon.

The round was allowed to stand.

Riot later reviewed the situation and concluded that officials should have rolled the round back. The tournament organizer accepted responsibility for the incorrect ruling but decided not to alter the final result afterward.

100 Thieves ultimately won the series 2-0 and secured a place in the Champions playoffs.

The sequence was:

  • xeus experienced the issue during a live 2v1 situation
  • Officials did not immediately replay the round
  • Riot later determined that a rollback should have occurred
  • The completed match result remained unchanged

Riot argued that retroactively overturning the outcome would also create competitive-integrity concerns because 100 Thieves were not responsible for the technical failure and had competed under the same tournament conditions.

100 Thieves Keep Their Playoff Spot

The ruling means 100 Thieves remain qualified for the Champions Shanghai playoffs.

FUT Esports, meanwhile, were sent into the lower side of their group following the defeat.

That distinction makes the incident considerably more significant than an ordinary technical pause. Champions uses a double-elimination group system, so every result directly affects qualification and elimination paths.

Riot’s admission that the round should have been rolled back also puts additional attention on how tournament officials handle future hardware problems.

A technical fault involving a player’s ability to shoot can directly change the outcome of an engagement, making consistent rollback procedures particularly important during an international championship.

Riot Plans Physical Changes to the Stage

Replacing the desks represents the more permanent solution.

Rather than attempting to solve the wireless interference purely through software or peripheral adjustments, Riot intends to remove the suspected source of the problem.

The incident also illustrates how stage design can unexpectedly influence competitive conditions.

Tournament infrastructure usually focuses on comfort, branding and broadcast presentation, but materials used in desks and other equipment can affect wireless technology when multiple devices operate in a concentrated environment.

Champions Shanghai now gives Riot a real-world example of that risk at its largest event of the season.

Assessment

The most important issue for Riot is not simply the presence of technical pauses. Large esports tournaments inevitably encounter occasional hardware problems.

The concern at Champions Shanghai is that the interference became persistent enough to require a tournament-wide change to player peripherals and was involved in a round Riot later acknowledged should have been replayed.

Moving temporarily to wired mice is a practical attempt to stabilize matches, while replacing the metal desks addresses the suspected underlying cause.

The FUT versus 100 Thieves incident will likely remain the most controversial part of the situation because the incorrect initial ruling cannot now be separated from a completed playoff qualification match.

For the remainder of Champions Shanghai, consistency will be crucial. If the desk replacement eliminates the interference and officials apply rollback rules reliably, Riot can prevent the technical issue from becoming a larger story than the competition itself.
