Ubisoft has announced that Matheus “Budega” Figueierdo, Head Coach of XSET, has been suspended for one year. The developer of Rainbow Six Siege ruled that Budega had committed a major violation of the tournament rulebook at the Six Major Charlotte.

This article contains language some readers may find offensive.

The incident that led to the suspension occurred on May 18 during a Six Charlotte Major 2022 group stage match between Team Liquid and XSET. Budega was allegedly heard using a term considered a slur by the LGBT community and was retroactively suspended just hours before XSET were due to take the stage in their quarterfinal match against Astralis.

Budega receives one-year suspension

During said matchup between XSET and Team Liquid, the Portuguese stream feed seemingly caught Budega venting his frustrations at Team Liquid’s in-game behaviour. During the outburst, the Brazilian coach appeared to use the Portuguese version of a word widely considered a derogatory term for a gay man.

Ubisoft officially announced its response to the incident on May 20, announcing that Budega would be suspended with immediate effect and that XSET would be issued a fine of $5,000.

While Ubisoft’s statement did not directly refer to the incident, a video of Budega’s comments surfaced on social media. Furthermore, Team Liquid head coach André “Sensi” Kaneyasu also made reference to the incident.

Budega initially responded to the sanctions with hostility, sarcastically thanking Team Liquid and, in a now-deleted tweet, argued that the word in question has a different meaning in Brazil/Brazilian culture:

“The word he translated HIMSELF, has nowhere near the connotation and the meaning in brazilian culture/Language. This is a hate complaint by Sensi, he’s done the same at S.I 2021. The word “bicha” is a common word for coward in my region in Brazil.”

However, he later released a statement apologizing for his actions.

With the suspension taking effect immediately, Budega was not present for XSET’s quarterfinal match against Astralis, which they lost 2-1.
