Her journey isn’t filled with rainbows and butterflies, nor carriages to take her on top. It has barriers that challenged her place in the esports world. Christine “Potter” Chi’s journey is a testament to how perseverance and skills will bring you the sweetest success.  

The Valorant Champions 2023 serves as the witness to how Potter’s leadership takes Evil Geniuses (EG) to a championship that leaves history in the competitive gaming scene.

From Counter-Strike Pro to Valorant Visionary

The two decades of her esports career saw the growth of Potter throughout. It was in the early 2000s when Potter started competitive play with Counter-Strike. She dominated the women’s CS scene, which led to multiple Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) titles on her shelves from 2007 to 2015.  

Eventually, as a new door opened in 2020, she moved to Valorant and joined the Evil Geniuses in 2021. She takes on a role as a player before becoming the head coach of the team. 

Building a Championship Team from Scratch

Nothing was perfect from the start. But her determination rounded the team well enough to be where they are right now. The team was far from a championship contender when Potter assumed the position. Their team even suffered from a humiliating 13-loss that made Potter question her decisions.  

Was the struggle in the early competitions worth it? It is best to say that it helped them identify the gaps in their team. Potter’s ability to eye talent and develop players shone through when she signed Demon1, an unknown player from EG’s open tryouts. 

The Turnaround: From Underdogs to Champions

It is a wonder how the team did not use up all their wish stubs. The path to the top was rough for Evil Geniuses. They often rely on other teams’ results to advance to the next stage, which led them to barely qualify for international events. 

But great leadership will not go unnoticed. Potter and EG began to sow their hard work with VCT Masters Tokyo. They might have missed the win by falling short against Fnatic. However, it certainly took the global stage by surprise when they reached the grand finals. 

With this performance, Potter and EG start on their historic run in Valorant Champions 2023. In Los Angeles,  EG took the revenge win against LOUD in the semifinal. As they entered the grand finals, EG became unstoppable by defeating Paper Rex for a successful claim to the world championship.

Potter’s Coaching Philosophy

Besides the skills and talents of the team, Potter’s coaching philosophy takes part in building the team and developing the player. 

Confidence can win the game. Potter understands the fact that to build a winning mentality in her players, she has to give them confidence. She strived to help the players believe that they are the best to overcome the doubts surrounding them.

Winning is important, but having fun is also an essential part of victory. Potter emphasizes to the team to have fun despite keeping their focus in the competition. Moreover, she proved her experience with her ability to adjust strategies mid-match and make crucial calls to turn things around in their favor.  

Lastly, she found the missing piece for her team. Potter’s knack for eyeing and nurturing talent turned an unknown player into the star player Demon1 is right now. 

Breaking Barriers 

Her win in the major Valorant tournament has sparked inspiration for women in esports. The barrier built against women in the league turned invisible as she won throughout the competition. Potter’s success with EG challenged the idea that coaching in competitive gaming is for male-only.

What is needed in esports to win goes beyond gender. The skills and leadership of a person is something you cannot put a label on but rather it is gained through the experiences.

The Future of EG and Potter’s Legacy

The Valorant Champions 2023 stucked as a moment to remember. Despite the victory, EG faced significant challenges when the offseason came, as most players transferred to other organizations. However, Potter’s experience built her for this moment to stand again and search for pieces of her team again.
