The International 2026 is officially underway in Shanghai, with 16 of the world’s best Dota 2 teams beginning their fight for the Aegis of Champions.
The tournament runs from August 13 to 23 and starts with a Swiss-system group stage before moving into its elimination phase and Main Event. Defending champions Team Falcons opened their campaign with a difficult 2-1 victory over LGD Gaming, while Team Spirit, Team Liquid, Aurora Gaming and Team Yandex all began with 2-0 wins.
With more than $2.9 million currently in the prize pool, every series carries significant consequences from the first day.
Falcons survive LGD and Topson in opening series
Team Falcons entered Shanghai as defending champions after winning The International 2025.
Their first opponent immediately provided a serious challenge. LGD Gaming, playing with two-time TI winner Topson as a late replacement for TaiLung, took the first map of the series and threatened an opening-day upset.
Falcons responded by winning the next two games to complete the reverse sweep.

For LGD, the defeat still showed that the hastily adjusted roster can compete with one of the tournament favorites. Topson only joined the lineup shortly before TI following TaiLung’s removal over a competitive integrity investigation.
Falcons, however, avoided beginning their title defense with an immediate loss.
Spirit and Liquid make convincing starts
The second wave of opening matches produced several cleaner victories.
Team Spirit defeated Xtreme Gaming 2-0, with Larl delivering an exceptional performance in the opening game. Team Liquid also swept Vici Gaming and continued its strong form entering TI.
Aurora Gaming needed a lengthy opening game against GamerLegion but eventually completed another 2-0 series. Team Yandex joined them in the 1-0 bracket after sweeping HULIGANI.

The clean starts give Spirit, Liquid, Aurora and Yandex an immediate advantage in a Swiss format where reaching three series wins means direct qualification for the Main Event.
BoomBoys become an early 2-0 team
BoomBoys have already taken another major step toward direct qualification.
The roster, competing under a neutral name instead of BetBoom Team, followed its opening sweep over OG with a 2-1 victory against Iron Wing.
It was far less comfortable than the first series.
All three games were lengthy, and the deciding map lasted more than an hour. BoomBoys eventually secured the victory to move to a 2-0 series record, putting the team one win away from direct advancement.

The result highlights how quickly the Swiss stage can separate the field. Teams reaching 2-0 have multiple opportunities to secure a third victory, while organizations falling to 0-2 immediately face elimination pressure.
Nigma recover as OG fall to 0-2
Nigma Galaxy and OG entered their second series needing a response after both were swept in the opening round.
Nigma delivered it.
The team defeated OG 2-0 to improve its record to 1-1 and keep a possible direct qualification run alive. OG, meanwhile, now sits at 0-2 after losing its first four games of the tournament.
The current pressure points include:
- BoomBoys moving within one series victory of direct qualification
- Nigma Galaxy recovering to a 1-1 record
- OG falling into the dangerous 0-2 bracket
- Iron Wing dropping to 1-1 after its first defeat
Swiss formats become increasingly unforgiving at this stage. An 0-2 team must win repeatedly simply to remain in the tournament, while the strongest opening teams can quickly secure favorable positions.
Shanghai hosts a different TI format
The International 2026 uses a 16-team Swiss group stage with every series played as a best-of-three.
Three teams will advance directly to the Main Event after earning three victories. The teams placed fourth through 13th move into an Elimination Round, where another five Main Event places are available.
The bottom three teams are eliminated before that stage.
Eight teams ultimately reach the Main Event at Shanghai’s Oriental Sports Center from August 20 to 23. The playoff bracket uses double elimination, with best-of-three series leading into a best-of-five grand final.
The current prize pool sits above $2.9 million, with approximately 42.5% allocated to the eventual champion.
Assessment
The International 2026 has needed only one day to produce several meaningful storylines.
Falcons survived their first major test, but LGD showed that its late roster change does not automatically remove the Chinese organization from contention. Spirit and Liquid delivered more convincing starts, while BoomBoys have already placed themselves in an excellent position at 2-0.
At the other end of the standings, OG is under immediate pressure after consecutive sweeps.
The Swiss system makes these early results more significant than a traditional round-robin opener. Every victory changes the quality of the next opponent and moves a team closer to either direct qualification or elimination.
No title contender has secured anything yet. But with the first two rounds already reshaping the standings, TI 2026 has quickly moved beyond introductions. The fight for the eight Main Event spots is already underway in Shanghai.
