Team Liquid have reached the pinnacle of Dota once again after winning The International 2024 over Gaimin Gladiators in a convincing win at the grand finale. This comes as a second tournament championship win for both Team Liquid and squad member Neta “33” Shapira, who won it back in 2022 with Tundra.
Although being favored to win, banking on Team Liquid was a tough sell owing to their previous fumbles in the closing rounds of past tournaments. Fortunately for them, this was not meant to be a repeat of past mistakes but instead a convincing blowout that earned them a resounding win at one of the grand stages of Dota.
Aside from lifting the Aegis of Champions, the team also took home the astronomical $1.161 million in prize money from one of the largest prize pools in esports history. The standings for this year’s tournament along with each team’s winnings are as follows:
- 1st place – Team Liquid – $1,153,776
- 2nd place – Gaimin Gladiators – $358,957
- 3rd place – Tundra Esports – $230,713
- 4th place – Team Falcons – $153,809
- 5-6 place – Cloud9, Xtreme Gaming – $89,739
- 7-8 place – BB Team, Aurora – $64,069
- 9-12 place – nouns, 1w Team, Heroic, Team Spirit – $51,235
- 13-16th place – Talon Esports, Team Zero, Beastcoast, G2.iG – $38,505
Second win for Team Liquid and 33
The final boiled down to a confident 3-0 win for Team Liquid after a fairly straightforward game where they absolutely dominated their competition in every aspect. Don’t let the outcome deceive you, all 3 games were remarkably exciting, with both teams giving it their all, but Team Liquid was just a cut above their competition every single time. This marks Team Liquids second win at The International tournament as well as a second win for one of their players, Neta “33” Shapira.
Team Liquid’s previous win at The International came back in 2017, making this the first win for this current roster. Team Liquid’s run to the finals hasn’t had many ups and downs, being an almost perfect run where they consistently showed consistency and determination. They faced off against formidable opponents and came out on-top every single time with a journey that included the likes of Extreme Gaming, Cloud 9, and Gaimin Gladiators, whom they had lost to in two previous meetings prior to this edition of the tournament.
The only blemish in their campaign came in a group stage loss to the defending champions, Team Spirit, after which they went on an undefeated run through the remaining challengers, winning them the title. The final kicked off with both teams looking to set the pace, with Liquid and Gaimin going in blazing. You wouldn’t be wrong to believe that the match was going to be a stalemate with so little to separate the two teams, but unfortunately for the Canadian side, the odds were greatly in Liquid’s favor, and they rarely faltered in the entire game. This composure and skill at the grand stage is exactly what lead to a resounding 3-0 win for Team Liquid marking the organization’s second ever championship.
