Talon Esports secure a top 3 spot at the Lima Major

Talon Esports went to the Lima Major as one of the event’s underdogs. But they quickly proved themselves to be one of the strongest competitors in the race.

During the group stage of this Dota 2 tournament, Talon only lost a single match out of the eight they played. Their nemesis was Tundra Esports, the 2022 TI champions. Four other teams drew against Talon and three of them lost.

None of the team’s victories were against the best teams in the group, so there was no reason to suspect that Talon would finish the Lima Major in the top 3. But here they are.

Talon’s run in the playoffs of the Lima Major

Talon started the playoffs stage with a painful defeat against Team Liquid. They did not manage to win a single game but they did cause some problems for the Europeans, who are currently considered to be the biggest favorites to win The International 2023.

Unfortunately for Liquid, they are no longer the favorites to win the Lima Major because their position 4 player had to return home to deal with a health issue. Immediately after he left, Liquid lost the upper bracket Final against Gaimin Gladiators because the stand-in, Mathis “Jabbz” Friesel, is nowhere near Samuel “Boxi” Svahn’s level.

This is great news for Talon because Liquid is their next opponent. If they win the match, they will compete in the Grand Final of the Lima Major. For Talon, the path to the lower bracket Final was full of tough matches.

The first of these matches was played against HellRaisers. Only two games were needed to secure the victory but both of them lasted for 43 minutes. This is a clear indication that HR posed serious challenges to the Southeast Asian team.

The next match was played against Team Spirit, who won The International 10 and continue to play with the same roster. Only one player left since then. This victory, against a recent TI champion, demonstrated that Talon know exactly what they’re doing at the moment.

The third lower bracket match was played against Entity and it turned out to be much easier than the fans expected. Two 35-minute games were sufficient for Talon to secure a top 4 position in the tournament.

The next match, against Shopify Rebellion, was really exciting and challenging at the same time. Talon eventually won (2-1) after a lot of struggle and will compete today against Liquid for a chance to play in the Grand Final.
