T1 and EDG advance from Group A as Hylissang breaks most deaths record

Fnatic crumble in the worst possible moment as Faker cements his greatness with another first place Group stage finish.

Well, an LCS team finally got a win and a tier-two tower. But it was at the expense of Europe’s chances for multiple teams advancing to the knockout stage. Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok made more history, as per usual, as EDG continued their quest to defend the World Championship title.

Faker leads T1 to top of Group A

Everyone probably knows that Faker is considered the Greatest of All Time when talking about League Esports. But after the games last night, we got a lot more statistics backing up this claim. Throughout the seven World Championships that Faker and T1 have participated in, they have always finished in first place during the Group Stage. In fact, Faker’s lowest placement in the biggest international tournament is in the semifinals.

Three of the six times he appeared already, he won the whole damn thing! And in four of the seven group stages he’s been a part of, he made EDG bow down to him. It seems he never forgave EDG for the 2015 MSI Finals loss, so he destined them to second-place finishes ever since.

Hillysang breaks most deaths record

On the flip side, Cloud9 and Fnatic flamed out in week two of the group stage in the most authentic way possible. Cloud9 ruined Fnatic’s chances of advancing from the get-go, securing the first win and tier two tower for an LCS team in the Group Stage. It was mainly Fnatic doing it to themselves, in the most Fnatic way possible. It seems they forgot the Spring Split meta, where Jinx counters Aphelios, not the other way around.

Apart from the questionable draft, we also got some vintage Zdravets “Hylissang” Galabov moments throughout the entire day. He died 14 times through three games yesterday, amounting to 25 deaths in six games in the Group Stage. With this, he has now the most total deaths in Worlds history, with 217 games throughout 53 games. For context, Faker has the second most, with 213 deaths in 103 games. Apart from having more deaths in half the games than the second next, Hylissang also holds the top spot despite having the least games played from anyone in the top 10 of that infamous list.

Yuumi gaming and bright lights

Fnatic didn’t learn from G2 as they left the Sivir/ Yuumi combo open once again. Much has been made of the issues Yuumi creates in the competitive scene, and it seems to have gotten worse since the durability update. Apart from being untargetable, giving way too much value in terms of statistics, summoner spells, and scaling, she now also does more damage than dedicated laners.

Apart from the annual Jensen kills Faker highlights, there was not much to cheer about these two Western teams. The LCS first seed went out being dismantled every single game apart from the Fnatic win. Stubbornness, ego plays, and a general lack of caring about the outcome of the match made the games hard to watch as a fan. Expecting changes is a habit for LCS fans, and with the humiliation being over, we are just happy to have hosted the event.
