Just 15 months after its launch back in 2023, Capcom’s long-running premiere fighting game Street Fighter 6 cracks 4 million copies sold, putting it on par with Mortal Kombat 1. This comes a year after releasing, which is a great feat as the installment seeks to break the last record of 10 million made over the entire lifetime of the previous game, Street Fighter V.
Earlier this year, Capcom announced that the game had roughly sold roughly 3 million units worldwide; this would account for the total sales made within the first 6 months post-launch. Their recent announcement of the game reaching 4 million units sold should mean an additional million copies were sold between January and August.
If the game can maintain that similar momentum for a few more years, then it will most definitely hit or surpass the record made by Street Fighter V. Capcom released Street Fighter 5 almost seven years ago, so if this new installment gets a similar lifetime, the odds are in its favor. The success Street Fighter 6 is enjoying is a result of the game receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews, with many praising it for being a lot better than Street Fighter 5, which had a very shaky launch.
The game is in all avenues a step up over the previous installment, with the only possible place Street Fighter 5 has Street Fighter 6 beat is in its roster selection. Street Fighter 6 is the game Street Fighter 5 should have been, and it’s great to see a competent Street Fighter game that can compete with other games in its genre. Street Fighter 6’s recent announcement of 4 million units sold puts it on par in terms of sales with Mortal Kombat 1, which should greatly indicate how much success the game is having, as Mortal Kombat has historically been the better seller.
Street Fighter 6’s success cannot be understated, as the game seems to be winning on all fronts. The game was honored with the title of best fighting game of the year at one of gaming’s largest award ceremonies, The Game Awards. The award was won through a blended vote by international media outlets and gaming fans, which only further emphasized the games astoundingly positive reception.
The game also recently unveiled a new character joining the roster called Terry Bogard from the Fatal Fury franchise. He would be the 24th character to be added to the roster, with 2 more planned to be released around spring and winter in 2025. Street Fighter 6 expects to end its lifetime with about 45 characters, so there are many more characters to expect in the following years. This commitment to bolstering the number of characters by such a hefty number just goes to show how committed Capcom are to ensuring the fans are completely satisfied with their product.
Street Fighter 6 launched in June 2023 and is available to play now on all major platforms.
