The University of St. Thomas is a small private Catholic university in Houston. They qualified for the 2022 CLOL Championship through the South Conference, upsetting defending champions Winthrop University to claim the conference title.

Their Championship run began against the University of Delaware, whom they saw off in a 2-0 sweep. The Round of 16 was trickier, as St. Thomas had to come from behind to beat the University of Michigan after dropping the first game to the Wolverines. They faced little trouble in the quarterfinals, sweeping the University of Western Ontario, but the win set up the biggest match in school history.

In the semifinals, St. Thomas faced two-time champions and 2021 runners-up Maryville University. Renown in both collegiate League of Legends and collegiate Overwatch, Maryville is a true giant of the scene. And it looked as if St. Thomas would go the way of so many other teams as Maryville won Game 1 of the best-of-five in just 24 minutes. But St. Thomas wouldn’t back down, rallying to take the next three games and sending the perennial contenders packing.

Bay State College is a private university in Boston. Their journey to the National Championship Game began in the National Esports Collegiate Conference. Bay State defeated Durham College to be the NECC’s representative at the CLOL Championship.

In the CLOL Round of 32, Bay State swept Marist College. They progressed to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 against St. Louis University in the Round of 16. The quarterfinals presented Bay State with a matchup against a fellow top-seeded team in UC Irvine, who were yet to lose a game at the tournament. However, Bay State were able to progress with another 2-1 victory.

Now one match away from the National Championship, Bay State encountered the tournament’s Cinderella story in Converse University. A Pool C team, Converse had upset Michigan State University to reach the semifinals. However, Bay State had no time for fairy tales and sent the South Carolina-based college home in a 3-1 victory.

Bay State will look to follow in the footsteps of their Super Smash team, who won their respective National Championship earlier in the year. Fans will also be rooting for the college’s Call of Duty team, who are also competing in their National Championship tournament on Sunday.
