Sony Entertainment, known for its series of PlayStation gaming consoles, as well as a lot of game exclusives, announced plans to expand its titles to PC and smartphones.

Currently, only 10% of Sony’s titles are released for mobile platforms. During the recent company business briefing, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan revealed that this amount will double in three years.

Plans for Sony’s extension to PC and Mobile markets

The expansion was explained by Sony as “the opportunity to move from a situation of being present in a very narrow segment”, so that the company can be “pretty much everywhere”. Mobile gaming continues growing rapidly every year, as it is becoming more accessible to players around the world, substituting the often expensive gaming PCs rigs.

According to the graph by Sony, the segment for PC games is even bigger than the Mobile one, which is only a benefit for players who like high-quality single-player titles. The decision to release its existing titles to mobile and PC was supposedly made following a positive community response to the recent transition of PlayStation exclusive games, such as Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War and Days Gone to PC.

Success of PC-ported titles allegedly determined the future of Sony Interactive strategy

For example, God of War, an award-winning title for PlayStation, was ported to PCs four years after its console release and received 97% of positive reviews by users on Steam. The decision helped the company not only expand its presence on the market but also to raise its revenue from $80 million last year to the estimated $300 million in 2022.

There’s no doubt that with such a success, we’ll see more and more PlayStation games transferred to PC. Moreover, the time of the shift to another platform seems to be much shorter compared to the case of God of War. Plus, the creation and promotion of new mobile projects will reportedly happen under a new business unit, however, more details are yet to be revealed.

According to Ryan, Sony strives to change the overall business strategy of most console games, as it sets the limits for the company:

“Historically, PlayStation Studios has done an excellent job of building a vast portfolio of single-player games with rich storytelling and beautiful graphics, but we’ve certainly limited ourselves to a fairly narrow section of the gaming market.

By expanding into PCs and mobile devices, and, it must be said, into online services, we have the opportunity to move from a very narrow segment of the overall gaming software market to a presence almost everywhere.”

Later he added that Sony Interactive is currently developing 12 gaming projects and even if one of them is commercially successful, it will make a large impact on the general business model of the company. Such a decision seems to be a win-win for both, the company and fans, as all players, be it console, PC or mobile lovers, will be soon able to play some of Sony’s greatest gaming titles.
