Following the benching of their newest recruit, Thiolicor, Shopify Rebellion has approached its new roster by importing a second player from the Southeast Asian region, skem. The 24-year-old will play in the position four role.

Skem will become the second Filipino player on the team, joining Yopaj in the North American squad. The two have previously played on numerous rosters together. The pair started making a name for themselves while playing for Neon Esports.

Later on, BOOM Esports recruited skem and Yopaj, forming the most potent iteration the organization has ever had. After years of trying, the Indonesian organization qualified for their first TI, where they eliminated the defending champions, Team Spirit, in the main event.

Skem is known to be one of the most versatile players in the world. He can play four out of five roles at a professional level. He has played carry, offlane, and both support roles throughout his career. Though he mostly found success playing position five, he should have no problems transitioning to the soft support role on the team.

In April, skem achieved 13,000 MMR, an insurmountable accomplishment that only less than twenty players have achieved. He is currently sitting second in the Southeast Asian leaderboard rankings, which is impressive considering he mostly plays support heroes.

The updated Shopify Rebellion lineup includes:

  • Artour “Arteezy” Babaev
  • Erin “Yopaj” Ferrer
  • Jonáš “SabeRLighT-” Volek
  • Andrei “skem” Ong
  • Kartik “Kitrak” Rathi

Though skem’s individual skills as a player were never doubted, it was still a surprising roster move considering he was playing on the other side of the world. His connection with Yopaj must have been the determining factor in securing a spot on the roster.

This transition means skem will leave his former team, Geek Fam, which was a full-Filipino squad. Though the roster had high-ranking players and looked good on paper, they could not keep up with the competition within the region, often losing to Team Aurora and Talon Esports.

The Rebels are participating in the PGL Wallachia Season 1 tournament, where they are fielding two stand-ins. SumaiL is replacing Yopaj, who failed to secure a visa in time. GH is taking over Thiolicor’s spot, as the team has not found a replacement for him yet.

As a result, skem will not join the team in the middle of the tournament, but will appear in the next scheduled event, DreamLeague Season 23 starting May 20.
