Riot Games recently enabled two-factor authentication (or multi-factor authentication) for all of their games, allowing their players an extra layer of protection for their account. Whether you’re a newbie or a veteran, it’s important that this option is enabled, so we’ve brought you a detailed guide on what this new protection is, how it works, and most importantly, what you need to do to enable it.

If you have a Valorant, League of Legends or even Legends of Runeterra account, chances are it has some value to you, whether sentimental or even monetary. Some players have accounts that are years old, accumulating skins, levels, and other important cosmetics that can be worth good money. With this thought in mind, Riot Games decided to – finally – add an extra layer of security to their community through two-factor authentication, but do you know what that is?

What is Two Factor Authentication?

Simply put, two-factor authentication is one more step you need to do before logging into your account. Normally you just need to enter your login and password, but now you need to enter a code that is sent to your email every time you try to connect. This is the best way Riot Games has chosen to help its users better protect their accounts, and even though it’s a simple process, it’s very effective.

This security enhancement is a feature offered by many online service providers looking for a way to help their customers protect their account from hackers. Most of the time when an account is stolen, the blame falls on the user himself, but it is always the company itself that needs to turn around to recover the use of this account. Usually this happens with a simple password change, but depending on the type of product you are consuming you can end up suffering a great loss, in addition to going through a bureaucratic process to recover access to your account.

Why Should I Use Riot Authentication?

First of all, it’s important to note that you are not required to enable this feature, but no one needs to have had an account stolen in the past to know the importance of an extra layer of protection. Imagine your account, with all those skins that cost time, money and dedication, do you want to go through the headache of having to contact the Riot team to get it back? And if you find out about the theft too late, what will you do?

It’s true that having to go through one more process to log into your account can be annoying, but this feature has been around for many years. You’ve probably come across this type of protection elsewhere, whether it’s social media, other gaming platforms, or even your bank. Some of them require the use of their own application (as is the case with Steam), but others simplify the process by using your main email as a form of validation.

We cannot say that this procedure is 100% effective and that your account will never be stolen again, but this is a simple procedure that has helped many people in recent years. We often have no control over who uses our computer, or we can even unintentionally infect our own machine. Either way, it’s clear that our passwords aren’t as secure as we think they are, so don’t waste time and enable the function on your account.

How to Enable Riot Authentication

The process to enable authentication is quite simple. First you will log into your account on the Riot page, go to the Login and Security guide, find the Two-Factor Authentication part and ask to confirm the email. Now you need to go to your Riot email and click on enable two-factor authentication. Remember that it can sometimes end up in your spam folder, so don’t panic if it doesn’t show up in your main inbox.

After doing the above process authentication will be enabled on your account. If you need to disable protection, just access your account settings on the Riot website, doing the same procedure you did to enable it. Now every time you log in to the game client you will also need to enter the 6-digit code that is sent to your email, however, if you are playing on a reliable PC where only you have access, there is the option to “trust” on that computer for 30 days, avoiding the use of the code in this period.

One of the most common problems in this type of situation is not being able to access the registered email of your account. Unfortunately in this case you will need to contact Riot support and ask for help to change it, as two-factor authentication can only happen with your email access.

Finally, it is useless for you to protect your valuable account and end up not protecting your main email, so we suggest that you choose a secure hosting that also uses this type of protection, such as Gmail for example. Also, a strong password with words, numbers and symbols can make your life a lot easier.
